Part of the problem is that they would have had to split up their armies to do it if it was the Water Tribes who were the next to have the Avatar.

Also the added benefit of killing all the air benders is that they had no armies and are the only benders other than fire benders who don't need a source for their bending, less of a source than the fire benders actually, because Aang even air bent underwater.
#39 - garroshhellscream (12/05/2014) [-]
but the problem there is that the air nomads had no army while the water tribes have a well defended city with a huge army. I'm not saying that it couldnt be done but it would be harder and the comet wouldnt last through the whole fight.
The fire nation would most likely only weaken the water tribe a lot and not destroy them like they did with the air nomads.

you brought up the sherman funnies, unreliable and laughably stupid adaptations of a cheap tank, which was dumb.
then you said "When it was introduced, it was better than any German tank" which is untrue and incredibly dumb. yes it was maneuverable, but it was poorly armored and had a tendency to simply burst into flames
and finally, "Just because it didn't have armor as thick as a fucking Tiger doesn't make it a bad tank." is true, but it's speed and maneuverability don't make up for the fact that the majority of them were outgunned, outarmored, and outmatched in any one on one fight on equal ground, to the point where allied tanks were being killed in a ration of almost 10-1, and the only reason the 1 was "killed" (read as abandoned) at all was mainly due to the german gas shortage
"The 103rd SS Heavy Panzer Battalion (s.SS Pz.Abt. 503) claimed approximately 500 kills in the period from January to April 1945 on the Eastern Front for the loss of 45 Tiger IIs (most of which were abandoned and destroyed by their own crews after mechanical breakdowns or for lack of fuel).[46]"

that would still require an awful lot of shermans, especially considering that the mine clearing variant of the sherman had a nasty habit of either simply bursting into flames due to the overloaded drivetrain, the chain drum flying off because the bearings were made of pig iron, or (and here's my personal favorite) whenever it detonated an anti tank mine too close, it would either send the chain drum into the tank, often killing the driver, loader, and commander, or if they were particularly unlucky it would do the above and destroy the tank killing all the crewmembers

Yeah, but I don't recall the Americans winning the war using Shermans that were sometimes produced with so little materials they lacked machine guns, main guns, or even any armor.

#89 - mrmcput (11/11/2014) [-]
What makes you think that Britain and France could have done shit to stop the Soviets? Britain was completely bankrupt, and France had just been liberated from 4 years of German occupation. If not for the US, Britain wouldn't have won in North Africa and never would have successfully landed in France. The Soviets would have continued to "liberate" all German occupied territory.

User avatar #15 - damping (11/11/2014) [-]
Not on the internet. On here everyone praises Russia and totally discounts the US's efforts. It is especially ignorant when morons say the US joined late. They joined 6 months after the USSR did.

What Russia did wasn't impressive. Stalin just threw unequipped bodies at the Germans and let the winter do the real work.
User avatar #16 - DiAnonLord (11/11/2014) [-]
Stalin was lucky with the first winter, but the war lasted another 4 years.

with time, and partly with american help, russia amassed a massive army of well equiped and well trained men (though quite barbaric)

american equipment was about 20% of the red army's equipment. it is a huge number, possibly without it they couldn't have won and definately would've had a longer war. that said, the other 80% was produced by russia (although, not a minor issue, a chunk of that was done in Gulags)
User avatar #17 - damping (11/11/2014) [-]
In total, the US deliveries through Lend-Lease amounted to $11 billion in materials: over 400,000 jeeps and trucks; 12,000 armored vehicles (including 7,000 tanks, about 1,386[27] of which were M3 Lees and 4,102 M4 Shermans);[28] 11,400 aircraft (4,719 of which were Bell P-39 Airacobras)[29] and 1.75 million tons of food.[30]

That is just what was sent to Russia. They would have starved death. Remember how close the Nazi's were to taking Moscow, Stalingrad and Leningrad.
User avatar #19 - DiAnonLord (11/11/2014) [-]
as i said, the US help was massive, that doesn't mean that the USSR was completely dependent on them.

as stalin said: the british put the time, the americans put the money, the russians put the blood.

u need equipment to win a war, but you also need men that will use it, and said men were for the most part russians
#55 - anonymous (11/11/2014) [-]
But the USA help came at the most important time when most of Russia industrial factories had been either captured or destroyed by the Germans. There was a period of the war were almost the entire red army was supplied with American materials. Without those supplies Russia would have had their ass handed to them. Lets not forget that America also supplied Britain with a huge amount of Airplanes and Cruisers which ended up making up a majority of the British fleet. Also, everyone seems to forget about Japan which we basically took on completely by ourselves. It should be noted that at the begging of the war the Japanese navy was considered the strongest in the world and their Army and Air force was also extremely impressive. They fielded what would go on to be the basis of modern day super carriers and also the best fighter plane in the war. America was also the only country to conduct war in two theaters at the same time and win.
