setheme (05/25/2012) [-] What they did on mythbusters was terrible. You can clearly see that the plane is moving forward, while it was supposed to remain stationary. It's impossible. I mean, just think about it. Lets say a light plane needs 150km/h to take off. We place it on the tread mill going 150 in opposite direction. The plane remains stationary for someone standing on the ground. Supposedly, it takes off. The wheels loose the contact with the treadmill. But remember? The plane was stationary. So what, its supposed to accelerate from 0 - 150 in a split second or just levitate above by magic? #65

xxgawdleaderxx (05/25/2012) [-] The plane needs to move forward or really any direction to fly, thats why there are thrusters. So no, it would just move the tires under the plane. Thats why planes cant stop midair. #63

setheme (05/25/2012) [-] I don't know what this idea is supposed to achieve, but I know that the plane will not fly anywhere. I assume that the giant treadmill is supposed to be moving at the same speed as the plane. This means that the plane will stay in one place, therefore there will be no movement of air around the wings. No movement of air = no differential pressure = no aerodynamic lift. #86

anonymous (05/25/2012) [-] Except the forward thrust comes from the propeller so it doesn't matter what speed the conveyer belt is going it will only spin the tires faster, the plane will still travel forward and take off. Think of a toy care sitting on a treadmill being held by a rope, as u increase the speed of the treadmill there is a slight increase in tension in the rope but not a significant amount you can still easily pull the car forward, but the wheels are spinning faster. | ||
