myself included believe that torture in some cases is ok, and are ok with it because they are bad people they are hurting, and getting the information from them asap to save lives is worth it. More of a "What needs to be done, is done" kinda thing. There are exclusions that need to be considered, like torturing an innocent or something, but if we need to locate a terrorist / bomb / captive asap, then i think its k.

1. Well, since i don't want to say the CIA purposely tortured innocent people, how can you justify torturing people without being able to say 100% sure they are terrorists?
2. Plus there are scientific studies which tell us that the gaining useful information from torture is almost impossible because people will admit things they didn't do just to make the pain stop.
3. If we torture people we're not better than any of the people we torture, we'll lose our moral integrity, the terrorists win.

Fair point, it does in fact depend on your major. But the US's big schools are generally the best at, well, everything. It's really easy to just chock it up to "Germany's schools are better than American schools in engineering", because most people will just think of the cars and not look any further into it. If you specifically look at engineering schools' rankings, though, American schools still come out on top. There are about 15 American schools ranked higher than Germany's top engineering school, and there ain't shit that can touch MIT.
I just googled top universities for engineering and looked at the list. I'm not claiming this to be super sophisticated research, just slightly more sophisticated than just assuming things based on Germany's cars.

The thing is, that those rankings always include research (and here the most important factors are the money spent for research and the number of nobel prize winners, which i doubt leads to a reasonable ranking). I have been to Jiaotong University (China) ranked 16, Purdue (U.S.)ranked 15 and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the German one was by far the one most challenging one concerning exams and lectures. Since most people don't go into research, I personally think this factor is way underrarted in most university rankings.
