telamatoes (05/21/2013) [-] First, I like getting my shit back, starting as some super badass with all their shit together strikes me as lazy and uncreative. I like earning my abilities, I like seeing my character grow. Connor doesn't. Ezio, and Altair, grew as you played them. Altair had to earn his stuff back, and as he does you learn how to properly use them. In the beginning I was just swinging my sword at random, by the end I was as precise and efficient as an assassin would be. Ezio learned everything from scratch. The game slowly introduced you to new abilities and old. It felt nice to see Ezio slowly surpass Altair in skill and equiptment. Connor just learns all of his stuff at once when the games skips through his learning period with Achilles. One second he is some Native American hunter running from a bear, the next he's dropping people left and right. You miss his almost entire coming of age. Second, Connor is not an interesting character, he is dumbass. I yellled at him for almost everything he did. He just did what others told him to, regardless of their side in the conflict, I felt like the game was just using the story as an excuse the visit important parts of the American Revolution. WHY THE FUCK WAS HE THERE FOR THE SIGNING OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, it made no sense. At least the other stories had a clever manipulation of history. As for the other characters, Altair was heartless, selfish, and naive, he hid all of that behind a stoic and emotionless mask, learned through years of assassinating. He grew as the game went on, he became curious, caring for his brothers, and a great leader through the experiences of the game, all still behind a stoic and emotionless mask. Explaining how Ezio grew is redundant, you explained it. Third, it's call ASSASSIN'S Creed, you are an ASSASSIN, the game should revolve around ASSASSINATING. In the other games assassinating this douche-bag I just spent an hour learning about was the game, and it was fun. Getting your shit back is fun, and it's good by way of a game mechanic, but they did that through you learning to use Haytham. Okay, there was no tutorial for the smoke bomb or poison dart, but they're covered through the various challenges. Connor grows from being a child who is angry at his mother's death, to a teenager who goes on his own to protect his village. Then he spends time being trained by Achilles - you learn about the various in game mechanics such as notoriety. You finally get the robe and start properly going after the templars. A lot of his character progression is shown through his interactions with the various templars. His releasing of his anger, and the growth of his understanding about the way that the world works, and how he must move through it as an assassin. The game was set during the American Revolution - of course they had Connor at some influential moments in history. If they didn't, they'd have wasted a massive opportunity. Deal with it. Altair was a dick who had his power removed, and gradually got it back. Less character progression than Connor, albeit more obvious at times. Ezio is a best. The whole point of assassinating people is for a political gain. You remove prominent figures who oppose you. Similarly, you can further your political goals through various other means, intimidation, coercion, revolution... An assassination is a means to an end. In AC3, you use a variety of means to your ends. I like the variety. | ||

telamatoes (05/20/2013) [-] I played AC2 after I played AC3 and thought 2 was better in every-way. The controls made more sense, the story was about 1001 times better, your character actually grew as you played, instead of AC3 were the second you get the suit you're as powerful as you're getting, lus, Ezio is just a better character than Connor. The one thing I really noticed was how the majority of AC2 was actually spent assassinating people. The most fun I had in AC3 was playing captain of a ship, that makes no sense. I think that the reason that Connor had all his shit so soon is that in AC1, you had all of your gear, then lost it because you were an arrogant wanker and slowly regained it. In AC2, you slowly got all of this new stuff from Leonardo Da Vinci. In AC Brotherhood, you had all of your equipment and lost it all, then you had to regain it all very slowly. In Revelations, much the same thing happened. By the time you get to AC3, we're sick of having each of our pieces of equipment slowly explained to us. We had 3 memory sequences of bloody Haytham, and then we had to grow up, so we just enjoy being a real assassin and being powerful. As far as characters go, Ezio is better than Connor, who is better than Altair. Ezio is a delightful character, and I like how you see him grow the order. I do however like the way that Connor interacts with Haytham, throwing up a nice theme of co-dependency between the templars and the assassins. Without one, the other can't exist etc. i also like how Connor seeks to prevent evil from befalling his people rather than just get revenge for the death of his family. Altair is a dick. AC1 was a lovely idea, and it was great - you got to play with cool hidden blades, and jump off stuff, and free run too. It was great, you got to perform the same assassination nine times over. There was no choice in how you assassinated, no variety. It was proof of a concept, but after playing AC2, it was made redundant. In terms of time spent assassinating people, I liked how the AC3 gameplay was led by the story, rather the story being led by the need to assassinate lots of people. I guess you just don't need to be constantly assassinating people when you've played AC1 through to Revelations. AC1 was cool, AC2 was fantastic, AC3 also very enjoyable. Special mention to Brotherhood for the introduction of recruits. Fuck Revelations with a bargepole. I know this is a large wall of text. Screw Flanders #174

telamatoes (05/20/2013) [-] No I meant that AC3 sucked and according to this post the only thing they changed was adding snow. AC3 hardly sucked compared to revelations. In terms of content added, the step up was great. After playing AC3, if you go back to one of the older ones, everything feels clumsy. #106
