On the other hand, it is common to shorten the names of countries in conversation. Such as, no one says "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" They usually shorten it down to just UK or Britain. The same concept is also applied to The United States of America. If your not a pretentious douche, it is commonly acceptable to shorten it to America, and most people who aren't full on retarded will understand what you mean, as there is no continent called "America".
