#5 - How to Balance a Check Book: Dont spend money you dont have.  [+] (8 replies) 05/25/2013 on woes of highschool +141

that's not actually what "balancing your checkbook" means.

you keep a checkbook to list all your deposits and withdraws.
"balancing" means you check your deposits vs your withdraws to make sure you have a positive balance. you also use balancing to make sure that checks and debit purchases have been cleared.

Then how are you supposed to build credit history? get a good credit rating? you have to take out loans and essentially "spend money you don't have" if you want to have anything down the road in life. how are you supposed to buy a house? a car? unless you're a millionaire i guarantee you don't have $200 thousand just laying around.

I don't have a credit card, and never will. It seems pretty retarded to willingly put yourself in debt for no reason

I think his point is that you will eventually want to stop renting property and purchase your own, and it is unrealistic to wait until you have over $200 000. And believe me, you want to build a good credit history, even if you don't need it right now. No credit is as bad as bad credit.

I just took up a 2M NOK loan based on how much I earn, to buy an apartment.

Actually that is incorrect. You want to build a credit rating? You go out get yourself a credit card. Use it to pay for only your gas. Your raiting doesn't go up more if you spent 10,000 dollars a month. It goes up the same if you spend 20 dollars a month. Pay off that card every month and just use it for gas. Don't go "Oh man that game looks awesome but I don't have the money to buy it right now I'll put it on my credit card" And to balance a check book well...that is just subtraction.....

Just learned that in my college financing class. Best way to get credit is to open a low interest credit card and only buy cheap things you can pay back easily. Very simple.
