Would you believe me if i told you the first time i watched the show i didn't finish the first episode. I got a few minutes in and left.

About 6 months later i did again, then i consumed the first two seasons because that's all there was back then. It's a good show, and once i stopped looking at the cover and reading the pages i loved what i saw.

I like to call them '' psychedelic black metal '' to myself

I'd say they are post metal, like Isis, Amenra, Steak Number Eight and Pelican.
If I would be even more specific and allowed to make up my own genre name I'd say they are Impressionistic Post Metal. I think these guys do with music what impressionistic writers do with words: Using a form of art (music) to invoking/conjure up a certain very specific image or feeling and "describing" it in as much detail as possible.
To me, every album of Cult of Luna since Salvation has an extremely distinct sound to it that completely resonates with the artwork and songtitles of that distinctive album. (The most obvious one being Vertikal, the most inexplicable one being Somewhere Along the Highway)
I could go into more detail about this, but I'll spare you my possibly way-too-in-depth thoughts, unless you really want me to.

One thing though...why black metal? To be quite honest, aside from very post-influenced stuff like Agalloch, I'd say there's nothing Black about CoL...

The riffage, I don't know, I can never name their riffs style / genres and then one day it hit me; it was closest to a form of black metal, the playstyle and rawness.... I can't name them better, its impossible !.... Maybe thats why I like their unique flavor.

But I definitely think they are sort of psychedelic in nature. Their sound is so warped it sounds like it came out of a white hole from outer space via tv statics lol. Good to see someone digging this gem of a band.

And yeah, ISIS #1, Cult #2 for me, and they will probably stay with my soul forever.
My biggest dream in music is to create music based on isis' spectrum by the way....

hmmmm...the thing is that for me black metal just doesn't work. I've given a shit-ton of the more acclaimed and artistic black metal bands a try, and the sound just really doesn't click with me. The whole cathartic/artistic feeling many people claim to hear in black metal just isn't there for me. For some reason I always find it to be missing any form of dynamics, idunno...to me Cult of Luna really is far from black metal.

But seriously, if you like the riffage/playstyle of CoL and the likes I highly suggest you check out Steak Number Eight.

And yeah. I'd love to do that too, and I have one friend who would like that too, but a guitar player and a bassist don't make a band. And it's so hard to find other musicians who dig this music. Also, I try to write in that style sometimes, but it always feels extremely inferior to the bands I look up to and what I'd want to write...

I'm unable to name their style / genre, drives me nuts I can only name their riffs and I thought it was closest to black, like I said, rawness etc. Other than that, they are not black at all, they are post-metal or something else but still I can't name them, the best I got figured is that theyre psychedelic at least...... Psychedelic-black was something I made up while listening to Vertikal 1 & 2 while high lol. Theyre so epic we can't even name them.

I think, considering ISIS' roots, their music started as dronish hardcore. When they got big underground, they got to make underground friends -meaning some bad people- who got them into acid whike socializing. Some freak like me told them to listen to them while on acid. Thats when they realized they could do so much more '' alien '' music.....

I came to this conclusion based on my researches about dr0gz after one day listening to them, meditating, and got a vision from the music itself.... I'll go no further than this, I don't want you to think of me as a weirdo. But know that ISIS' music is something so simple and beautiful ( and forceful ) turned alien and progressive as hell. And that is fucking glorious !
