watch it again, and compare the first season with the last seasons of Breaking Bad. there is a fair deal of awkward situations with a good dose of irony of fate. You as the viewer sit smirking. The show was (relatively) lighthearted.
Whether that is an intentional contrast, meant to lure viewers in, or make the characters seem endearing before the torture begins, i'm not at all sure.
