Nice. I did a search and saw that the book is translated into my own language aswell. I'm not really keen on translations normally, but I don't speak russian, so I tend to go with english translations since (I've figured, there are more professional translators in larger countries and larger publishers). I like books that don't throw all the suspense n you at once. I like the build up of fear and emotion. If you can't sympathize with the characters, the whole realism in the books just falls apart. Oh, and for the depressing part, I love depressing books. The feeling of hopelessness and despair is something I appreciate in literature, so thats no worry. No emo .

Great scott! Thank you so much. Now I know what books to read after my exams.
I like the lore you've described. Seems like a well planned universe. Oh, and cool wallpaper.
The games are first or third person shooter, right? I'm not very good at those.

I really hope this book is good! Cheers.

Heads up, it's a really rough translation if you read the english version. I was lucky enough to read both english and russian, and the english one has some pretty bad grammar mistakes.

But the series altogether is really fun and enjoyable to read, but also rather depressing. The author really gets into the feeling of apocalypse, and thus doesn't give many character's hope. He changes that in the sequel though and follows a dude named Homer who is getting late into his years and just wants people to smile once in their lives. But the characters are all really interesting, especially the protagonist of the first novel, Artyom.
Artyom is the first human to be able to speak and communicate with the Homo Novus, and thus the next "true" step in human and novus evolution.

Anyways, as far as the political stuff goes, imagine a cold war game of thrones scenario. It's mostly a three-way battle between three powerhouse micro nations, The third reich, the red line, and the hansa station. Third reich and red line want control over the whole metro while hansa wants money and survival, more or less.
But goddamn, the horror in the stories is perfect. Most authors try and just drop the whole scare factor on you at once, but the author here makes you feel the constant feeling of death and fear that truly comes with the destruction of both the world and the afterlife.

Splendid. This sounds like something I'd enjoy very much. A bit of FallOut meets DayZ survival? If so, count me in. Is there going to be a series of books, or is these two books the only ones? And isn't there a game with the same name?
#3521 - millennial (05/22/2014) [-]
It's more of horror/political based than fallout, and the mutants aren't human mutants like zombies or ghouls. The most prominent mutants, aside from the novus, are the Upyr. They're giant mutated rats that have become a hive species now and pose more of a threat than what fallout's molerats are. There's also Demons, which are giant mutated bats that look like gargoyles, and there's also ghosts. According to some lore in the series, once the bombs fell, humanity destroyed hell and heaven somehow. Now, when you die, you soul stays in the metro and relives the moments before your death. In some places where a giant group of people died at once, the spirits become hostile and kill all intruders and such. And right now it's planned as a trilogy, with 2035 being written. It's hard to keep up with relevant info on the series where it's a trilogy originally written in Russian, so most, if not near all, info on release dates and progress are in russian and not bothered to be translated. And yeah, there are games based off of it. Metro 2033 follows the same, more or less, plot of the first book, and metro; last light follows its own story with the protagonist from 2033, whereas 2034 follows a new protagonist altogether. The games are really fun though, and worth playing.
some wallpaper for you.
