I agree, your body, your choice.

Until we get measles outbreaks, or smallpox makes a comeback.

Or when a terrorist decides to release a bio bomb, and we don't want to take the anti-anthrax meds because "they might cause autism, even though no links whatsoever have been found".
User avatar #175 - mikepetru (04/12/2015) [-]
Freedom always has a risk. You are free to reap the benefits of your choices as well as the consequences. In the event of a bio-bomb, truth is no amount of vaccines will protect you. Vaccines are a preventative measure, but they will not stop you from catching the disease. They can only provide your body a slim chance of fighting off these diseases more effectively. One cannot assume that because everyone in a city is vaccinated that the disease will not be caught. Vaccines won't stop you from catching a disease, they only control how your body individually responds to it. A vaccinated person is just as susceptible to catching anthrax as someone who isn't. An unvaccinated person is only bringing a greater chance of dying to themselves, not to others. If Anthrax wants to kill you, it will, vaccine or no. But then it goes into what if parents don't get their kids vaccinated? But that goes into the realm of what rights parents have in regards to their children's development which is a whole 'nother debate.

I propose that we also remove the FDA, since they have a say in what can be placed in your body (you know, they limit the amount of toxins that you can take in, but since that's controlling, they shouldn't exist).
User avatar #159 - mikepetru (04/12/2015) [-]
We are living in an age where the standard of living has risen to such a high level that most people are conscientious about what goes into their bodies. Would you buy an unmarked food or beverage nowadays that did not have the ingredients listed on it? We have news sources that are aching to find some scandal to report on in industries such as the food industry. And because our society has risen to such a level of analysis when it comes to the foods we consume that any company that would willingly put dangerous levels of any harmful substances into their products would be committing suicide. Killing/Poisoning customers is not good business. How many recalls of food in the past few years have been the result of an FDA mandate, and not from the actions of the company itself? In fact, in the 80's and 90's, there was a cheap overseas drug that fought HIV better than most American drugs, but the FDA forbade its sale. Why? No comment. Because the FDA exists solely to create a monopoly on the drug trade for the pharmaceutical companies, since their regulatory power has been taken over by the companies that now regulate their own products. The FDA does not protect, it controls. And control is not always used to benefit those being controlled.

But all of this is beside my original point, which is whether or not you believe it's your body, your choice.

Actually, it does depend. It isn't as black and white as you seem to think.

For instance, I don't think that the government has the right to put bleach into my body against my will, however, if it's for my health or others, then I do see why it happens.
User avatar #139 - mikepetru (04/12/2015) [-]
So you're saying if it's for your own health the government can control what goes into your body? So government should be allowed to stop you from eating fast food because it's for your own health? If they can control what goes in, they can also control what doesn't. You would drink bleach, regardless of what the effects might be, so long as someone told you it's for your own good? So long as they provide a reason, or at least a reason you agree with, you would relinquish the power to make that decision for yourself? There are a million different "but what if" scenarios but they also rest on the principle that the government should be given control off your body, in some form or other. When you break all of these arguments down to their most basic principles, it is alot more black and white than many people tend to realize.
User avatar #142 - dammriver (04/12/2015) [-]

But they're not putting things in our body against our will. They're saying, if you don't want to put this particular thing in your body, that's fine, but we won't support your decision.

Mind you, I'm speaking generally about the whole vaccine debate, not this issue specifically. And I am in no way taking sides, only presenting this one question that most people don't like to think about.
