The only thing that keeps Nintendo floating is remakes of old titles. They rarely to never got anything new that actually makes it big so they stick to the old route.
And the changes they make to the ''new'' games are so minimal that it could nearly be a dlc to the older game (mario kart have had the same gameplay as it have always been with the only change is new maps and karts).

The main problem is that it all feels like and looks like the same with some few exceptions.

You are right and wrong at the same time. Nintendo has games such as Madworld, Geist, No More Heroes. Each of the big 3 has their exclusives. By your logic Halo 4 (or who knows what number they're on) is the same as Halo CE, and Final Fantasy 7 is the same as Final Fantasy 1. Every franchise has gameplay similar to the one that came before it, otherwise it wouldn't be a series.

JK Rowling wouldn't have wrote a sci-fi Harry Potter novel, because it's a fantasy genre. Mario Kart is a racing game, Smash Bro.s is a party fighting game.

Nintendo, and Microsoft and Sony, are all like Apple in the sense that many of their profits come from a person's continued use of the product. In short, customer loyalty. Gaming industry is different than other industries because this 'loyalty' is forced by console exclusives and even how one game won't play on another system, even though the technology is there. For many people once you buy a single console, that's it for 4 years. Drawing back to first party titles, this is very good for them, as they draw almost the entirety of that game's profits back into the company.
