I disagree, it would be wrong to interpret it as a cat or as a star chart in an artistic sense. If you do so, you are wrong.
User avatar #215 - metaol (06/20/2014) [-]
Why?
Because the artist disagrees?

Becomes all interpretation then not like a ridiculous criminal novel, in which we all are the detectives desperately trying to figure out what artist meant?

A lot of beautiful paintings have been made and interpreted, without the artist meaning anything specific.
An artist isn't always aware why he feels what he feels, or how his feelings are expressed unconsciously in his paintings. Also, artists are often unaware of the artistic periods that they are a part of, thinking themselves individuals, and only in retrospect realising that they were affected by a grander and more general attitude.

I would say yes, it is not a picture of a cat. It seems absurd to us to consider it this way, but let me give a counter-example to demonstrate that your answer has equally absurd consequences.

Say a child dots a piece of paper with a pencil at random. To us, it would appear to be random dots. But say that there is a race of aliens who look at the chart and identify it as a well known constellation that can only be seen from their planet. Does that make the child's dot drawing a star chart? Maybe it could be used as one, but it would be absurd to say that it's a drawing of the constellation.

In the same way, your cat drawing could be used to demonstrate what a cat is without actually being a drawing of a cat.

Furthermore, I believe that an item's utility and its artistic meaning usually have to be taken separately. Even if we grant that the picture is of a cat, the fact that the artist did not know it was a cat would have to be the defining feature of any artistic interpretation. A critic failing to take this into account would be demonstrably wrong in his or her interpretation.
User avatar #213 - metaol (06/20/2014) [-]
The point is, that we could interpret it is as being a picture of a cat, it doesn't matter what the artist postulates. And although this interpretation is rather a shallow one, it still is an interpretation.
The same can be said about the child's star chart, once again the artist is no kind of an authority. Maybe his intention wasn't to make a drawing of the constellation, but apparently he did it anyway.
If a person sees something distinct in a piece of art, then his interpretation isn't void just because the artist disagrees with him.

I know what you mean with the man. Especially since in the prologue there is a character who is just called "The Man", so do continually refer to another character like that probably wasn't a good idea.

As for the crescendo. Well, technically you're right, but I do it to spite all the shitty music teachers I've had in the past. Cacophony is a better word, I'll change it when I make a new draft, if I make a new draft.

When I write, I usually write, look over, then post. A third or fourth revision is definitely not a bad idea, and I'll definitely do that as I go forward.

I think you'll be surprised though that it's not all that hard to reread your own work. I mean, if you're writing for the right reasons then you're writing a story that you'd enjoy. Whether it's a shitty story or not, I'm writing it to my preferences, which makes it very important that I put this stuff out there so I can get unbiased opinions. Putting your stuff out there isn't really as bad as you'd imagine either, especially if you're putting it out there for feedback, people tend to take their reading and responses seriously if you're asking for feedback. If you write dude, then definitely put it out there, I know I'd read it.

Feedback is why I do this man, thanks.

Great, I'm finally back with some feedback.
First of all, I want you to know that whatever I say, I'm not trying to make fun of you in any way. I have a great deal of respect for what you do, and I think it's immensely brave of you to post your work online I would never dare do that myself .

I think you need to ask yourself if you really want to write "the man" that many times.
I can totally see that it has narrative qualities, but I think that maybe it gets a bit redundant. But in the end, you're the writer, do what you wanna do. If you want to leave it as it is, then fine by me.

In chapter 1, you write something along the lines of "it reached a crescendo". This is a very common and understandable misconception. and I can totally see why you made this mistake. The thing is, a crescendo is not reached, it is the process of reaching something; a progressive increase in intensity. Many people make this mistake, but as a musician it hurts my eyes to read something like that.

I think that you generally need to look at what you've written even though I know how much it hurts to read ones own material , and ask yourself "is this really the best way to tell what I'm trying to tell?".
I like your stuff, I actually do, and I'm excited for the next installment, but I think this great story you're trying to tell deserves a little more care when it comes to writing. Obviously you can write, and not bad at all actually, so I think your story deserves to be looked at again by you.

Ultimately; great work, keep going.
