anon (10/29/2015) [-] Yeah. Obscene levels of ignorance legitimately make me angry. I am sick of the sheer anti-intellectualism going on. And yes, I consider much of this no longer just "Stupid", this is full-blown anti-intellectualism. Actively working against having to be intelligent. It's disgusting and and overall threat to future generations and quality of life for all. | ||

| Yeah. That's why I like the Oxford comma. But the comma used here, between the subject and verb, I have little insight as to the mechanics of it other than ' it works well enough to convey a point, so why is it wrong '? Language in general morphs. Unorthodox usage happens every so often, and I've never seen a hard and fast rule about the comma in reference to... whatever happened here. So. What. | ||

| Suspension points... an ' ellipsis '? That's what that's called. Commas can separate elements, sure, but that's not all they do. That's why I'll argue about the Oxford comma, but not this one. English is fuckin' weird. Unless an idea doesn't fully convey properly, the rules are pretty pliable. #48 -
merrrione (10/28/2015) [-] i just used wikipedia mate, i'm not an english major The triple-dot punctuation mark is also called a suspension point, points of ellipsis, periods of ellipsis, or colloquially, "dot-dot-dot". but yeah, those and isnt the oxford comma used exactly to separate elements, in order to tell them apart from what could be an apposition? Yeah. That's why I like the Oxford comma. lathyrusvii (10/28/2015) [-] You could probably be correct in this, now that you've explained the rule. Unfortunately, I can't really think so well with a person reading over my shoulder, a house I'm trying to escape, and a child ( not mine ) screaming incessantly in the other room. Pic related, it's me getting my shit together. However, so far as I understand it, commas are simply tools by which it is made known that there is a pause in the flow of speaking, and thus, it can be placed just about fucking anywhere. The rules of English were never nailed down as tightly in the schools I've been to as they were with you, I suppose, and language is a shifty horrendous monster of a thing anyway. The only comma I argue about is the Oxford comma. The content made enough sense. Fuck it. IDC. #46 -
merrrione (10/28/2015) [-] commas dont just note a pause in speech, they note a detachment between the elements of speech. it's why people bitch about them, and all other types of punctuation marks. i cant list all uses of a comma because 1. i dont know all of them and 2. the ones i do know are too many to pin down pauses in speech are usually conveyed in written form through suspension points (...) merrrione (10/28/2015) [-] lathyrusvii aximil so i thought about it, and you still cant put a comma between a subject and a verb, but you cant put a comma between the subject and the verb of the same sentence since the verb is in -ing form (that's what we called it in high school, unsure if it's different where you live) it makes me think they're actually two different sentences, as in: "(this is a) baby, (who is) making faces" - note that in this form "baby" is an object, and "who" is the subject of the subordinate sentence in a single sentence you can never put a comma between subject and verb, and since every language in existence has sentences made up of subjects, verbs and objects, i assume you cant put a comma between subject and verb in any language for example, you cant say "the baby, makes funny faces" simple right? #44 -
