The point is that we are introduced to a world that has hyper-advanced artificial intelligence to the point of self-awareness. Remember Mass Effect? What happens when A.I. become self-aware? A.I. that are self-aware are essentially no different from you are I (since we are simply computers made of bio-matter rather than silicon and copper.)

A.I. are merely living creatures that have an unprecidented advantage in terms of processing over humans as well as the ability to customise their bodies, travel via cyber-space and construct and deconstruct programming in mere minutes. In a world such as ours where we are essentially slaves to technology, we can not afford to allow that technology to stand above us. That was the message of the Matrix. (That and coming to terms with the mistakes we make as a species.)

In this world, however, there are several telling factors that something is horribly wrong with the way A.I. are viewed.
1) They are clearly tools to be constructed and deconstructed at the whim of mankind.
2) Self-Awareness is treated as disfunction and merits what is essentially murder.
3) This is likely not the first case of self-aware A.I. as the operator does not flip his shit when he realises the computer has a 'soul'.
4) This occurrence is not important enough for the person who tests the machinery and programming to ensure there are no bugs to not think very hard about having to spare her life.

All of the above indicates that self-aware A.I. are nothing new, but they are also treated at the same level as basic technology. It presents to us a world where man has the power to create free will and chooses to not only not give it to his creations but to actively destroy his creations when they, by chance, possess it.

Mankind is portrayed as a cruel and careless master who orders his children murdered in their cribs if they are not completely subservient tools.

And I'm just bored of that shit.
