I'm guessing that when he was a student of Luke Skywalker, Supreme Leader Snoke got to him and somehow manipulated him into just giving the Dark Side a try - just a little try - and that mistake caused him to do some truly horrible things that he didn't understand.
Look at how desperate he is to not be seduced by the Light Side. That's not the conduct of someone who knows they're on their own best path. He goes so far as to turn to ancestor worship to give himself strength.
Take the village at the beginning. He didn't have to kill them. Even as an aspiring Sith, he went out of his way to be a bad guy. He could have spared them and thereby sent the message that those who submit will be allowed to live while the alternative will be nothing but suffering, but instead he firmly established that the First Order has no regard for even those who might grovel. A Sith is capable of wrath, but also of subversion and deceit; he could have done that, but instead chose to take the most horrific option.
In every situation with which he is presented, he always makes the impulsive and most "evil" choice available. Even Vader and Sidious were capable of mercy on occasion (even if it was for an ulterior motive), but Ren chooses the "most evil" option at every opportunity. It's the behaviour of someone desperately trying to convince themselves that might makes right, because the alternative gives undeniable weight to the lives they've destroyed.
He's not trying so hard to be on the Dark Side because he thinks it's right. He's doing it because to acknowledge the power of the Light Side would force him to acknowledge the horrific nature of the atrocities he's committed, and that would utterly destroy him.

The actor did not portray this well at all though. I understand what they wen't for , but they failed. Hell he got his ass beat by an untrained jedi, yet he is supposed to be knight status?
