Most were founded during the classical revival among the academics of the 1800's. they use greek letters (Alpha Tau Omega, Sigma Kappa) to identify themselves.

Maybe at first glance. However when you realize that it could lead to things such as more women in science (and female scientists have proven their merit over the years) then it really is important.

If someone has the opportunity, the desire and the talent, they wont care If theres some sort of gender bias attatched to the program. We choose our path, our path does not choose us. That is the best case scenario

No, we're talking in terms of what is desirable or thought of appropriate for women. For example, when we say "girly major" we tend to think of things like psychology, sociology, or gender studies. As opposed to "manly major" which steers us to engineering, science, and math. I'm not saying women don't have legal equality. They do. I'm saying there's still a ways to go in terms of social change. Things we don't really think about.
User avatar #259 - thepizzadevourer (05/01/2015) [-]
I very much see what you're saying. But being A) a guy and B) in a "manly major" myself (Chemistry), I don't really see what you're saying borne out in the field. Yeah, there are certainly a lot more male than female chem majors. At the same time, I don't feel like women are dissuaded in any way from taking chemistry. Quite the opposite in fact, we're glad to see them simply because there aren't as many of them.

What I'm trying to say is I think these fields are viewed as manly, not because we think women can't do them (there are amazing examples in every field of women who could, so I don't see how you could think that. Marie Curie is a good one for chemistry). They're viewed as manly simply because men are more likely to enjoy doing them.

For example, men more naturally think spatially www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/sex/articles/spatial_tests.shtml . That doesn't mean women can't do it as well as men, it just takes more effort. That also doesn't mean every male is good at thinking spatially, or every female is inferior to the guys (I, for example still have to think about the difference between left and right occasionally). But I would argue that, on average, men are more likely to enjoy jobs that rely heavily on spatial thinking. That doesn't mean that women should be excluded, or less preferred, in these jobs then men, but trying to force an equal amount of both sexes in every kind of job just seems more likely to hurt than to help.
