How would this be possible with an aircraft catapult?

the aircraft catapult is the slide built into the deck of the ship to launch the jets off and give them extra lift. You can launch a huge amount of weight a long range. They use to show off their catapults by putting a football onto the little wheel carriage that slings the aircrafts wheels, and watching it go up and out. To prove the ships speed also, they would steam into the wind. The ball will naturally fall back towards the point it came from if launched into the wind, and the ship moving forward can close the distance. If done just right the ball falls back to the deck.

I think they just recently retired the Enterprise.
