I'm just advocating caution, sometimes the effects of playing with the ecosystem aren't apparent until after the fact. Also, just because eradicating mosquitoes wouldn't have consequences doesn't mean anything, since it will be difficult to specifically target mosquitoes without catching other species in the crossfire.
Also, not trying to be Dawinistic, but humanity is already consuming many times more resources than our earth can support at this time, eradicating mosquitoes will likely cause another unprecedented explosion in the human population. I'm not saying we just let people die, but we need to figure out where to put all these extra people, otherwise we're going to be in much deeper shit.

No it's not. There's no fish in still water (I'm talking about things like puddles, and temporary lakes that only exist during the rainy season - they're quite often stagnant)

Perhaps, however what people don't always realize is the importance of biodiversity. We want to keep as many different species around as possible not just for the hell of it or for specific ecosystems, but because biodiversity provides a buffer against mass extinction. The more species we have, the less likely we are to see an ecosystem collapse if shit really hits the fan (i.e asteroid impact, extreme volcanism, runaway global warming, etc..).

For example, we now believe that part of the reason the dinosaurs went extinct was because they were already in decline when the asteroid hit. If the cretaceous ecosystem had been as diverse as it had been in earlier time periods, the dinosaurs might have actually survived the impact.

as much of a pain in the ass as mosquitoes are, in this age when biodiversity is falling at a sizable rate, killing off even more species might not be the best course of action.

May be a bit off the main topic, but I'm just going to leave this here.

I was talking about non-avian dinosaurs.

Ostriches.

Doesn't count.
#201 - xrayfishx (09/24/2014) [-]
You wanted a non-avian dinosaur. Non-avian does mean unable to fly, right? Therefore the ostrich is a non-avian dinosaur. How's a raptor any more a non-avian dinosaur than an ostrich?
User avatar #203 - doctorprofessornv (09/24/2014) [-]
An ostrich doesn't have a tail, teeth, or front digits with claws, and therefore is still a bird.
#208 - xrayfishx (09/24/2014) [-]
And, as the above diagram illustrates, birds are dinosaurs. A non-avian bird = a non avian dinosaur. You wanted a non-avian dinosaur so an ostrich is the best you're going to get.
User avatar #176 - martycamp (09/24/2014) [-]
Are you going to go tell the millions of people that will die from mosquito-borne infections that?

But look. If it were that much of a concern, the scientists that worked on this would have noticed. There's been years of research done on this, with maps of how the mosquitoes interact with other species. If they say that we can get rid of them and there's no consequences, then I'm inclined to believe them. Besides, it's not as if they'd kill every species of mosquito. Only the ones which could carry and transmit diseases like malaria and yellow fever.

David Cameron was the one that didn't want that question on the ballot paper, where as Salmond did want it.

There are as many leading economists in the world that say independent scotland would be successful as there are that they say it would be disastrous. The truth is no body can answer that question until it happens.

Even Alistair Darling and Cameron both admitted Scotland would be a successful independent country they only argued that it would be more successful in the union.

Even a UK Government Report called the McCrone Report said Scotland would be a successful nation

I know next to nothing about the issue (I watched Braveheart if that counts) so excuse my ignorance if I get something wrong, but wouldn't it be simpler to push for more autonomy in Scotland rather than going straight to independence? I suppose the issue with that would be that England naturally would oppose it, right? Now, pushing for more autonomy seems like it would be even easier than it was considering that a good portion of Scotland seems to want full independence and autonomy would be a good compromise that could get those people what they want without leaving the country high and dry financially.
User avatar #91 - martycamp (09/19/2014) [-]
You've hit the nail on the head. The vast majority of both yes and no voters would have voted for devolution Max (the maximum level of devolution possible), thus granting Scotland a great deal of autonomy. But David Cameron (the prime minister) let Alex Sammond (Scotland's First Minister, and head of the yes movement set the question). And the question he set was a straight yes or no, because he knew there was no chance yes would win if devo max was on the table.

(If you don't know, Scotland is already partially devolved from the UK, with our own parliament that exclusively controls certain things, for example the Scottish NHS and education in Scotland. It's why Scottish university students don't have to pay tuition fees, and we have different qualifications from England and the rest of the UK)
