meh, at the same time, even if we ''fix'' homosexuality. Neither the human race or the individual would gain anything. From a strict reproduction view, gay people can still donate semen. Also we really don't need an increase in our population grow rate.
User avatar #141 - luqmanr (12/03/2013) [-]
So from a biologist point of view, being gay is considered being a defect?
User avatar #201 - martycamp (12/04/2013) [-]
Essentially. The goal of every living organism is to reproduce (naturally). Gay people generally don't. It's basically equivalent to being infertile

Question
Does masturbation have any effect on serotonin levels?
#24 - anon (12/03/2013) [-]
If they could actually "cure" homosexuality, I'd be all in for it. I really don't want to be gay and never have wanted to be. I'm not self hating, and have accepted who I am and will an happy with it, but I really do wish it could be a choice.
User avatar #40 - crazyhindu (12/03/2013) [-]
If you don't want to be gay then don't? I mean I'm not jumping on the whole its a choice its not a choice debate but If you don't want to have sex with men....then don't. I mean I'm straight and If i didn't want to have sex with a women then I wouldn't.
#20 - serotonin (12/03/2013) [-]
I can make you gay. Obey me!
User avatar #15 - mutzaki (12/03/2013) [-]
Sexuality isn't a choice, but it isn't something you are born with. For humans, sexual identity isn't something that starts developing until you're a toddler. From there on, it's your experiences and social imprint that leads you a certain way. This is why it's so common for hipster teens to find themselves being bisexual or "pansexual". If you spend time with a lot of people that put a huge amount of importance and thought in sexuality and gender, and hang around with people that identify themselves as pansexual, bisexual, asexual, etc., you are much more inclined to develop that way too. This isn't me saying anything like "homosexuality is a disease and don't hang out with them because they make you queer", but this is just me sort of crudely saying that social imprint from your environment when growing up affects your sexual identity immensely.

Epigenetics has been researched on whether or not it has any effect to sexuality, which it does. However, I personally believe that epigenetics doesn't nearly tell the whole story, but rather works more as a push in a certain direction and makes you somewhat more likely to end up developing a certain way.
User avatar #187 - guymandude (12/04/2013) [-]
sexual identity and sexuality are two completely different things. I din't think so for a long time, until I heard about (multiple) cases where women were attracted to males, and yet wanted to be male themselves instead of women. essentially, these women had the defining characteristic of a "straight woman" but, instead feel they are "gay males."

still confuses me a bit.
User avatar #189 - mutzaki (12/04/2013) [-]
When I say sexual identity, I'm referring to both sexuality and gender.
User avatar #191 - guymandude (12/04/2013) [-]
okay, but what I'm saying is that they don't group together.
User avatar #192 - mutzaki (12/04/2013) [-]
Since both are the result of social imprint, in this case, they can be grouped together. Though, since the topic was only sexuality, I could've said so.
User avatar #48 - kanadetenshi (12/03/2013) [-]
Neurological evidence has shown that sexuality develops as early as in the womb.
User avatar #50 - mutzaki (12/03/2013) [-]
Not quite. Epigenetics take place in the womb, but the effects don't show until the child starts its sexual development, which starts around four years old, give or take. A child has zero sexual identity until then, and even so it takes many years for a child to reach that stage of not finding the opposite sex yucky.
User avatar #62 - kanadetenshi (12/03/2013) [-]
This is a perfect example of the blank slate hypothesis, something that has been constantly refuted by evolutionary psychologists.

A number of sections of the brain have been reported to be sexually dimorphic; that is, they vary between men and women. There have also been reports of variations in brain structure corresponding to sexual orientation. In 1990, Dick Swaab and Hofman reported a difference in the size of the suprachiasmatic nucleus between homosexual and heterosexual men. This was determined within the womb.

Yes children have no sexual identity because they haven't developed the hormonal and physical changes of puberty yet. But that doesn't mean that their sexuality hasn't already been determined.

While epigenetics do play a little role in sexuality it has little to do with enviroment, there is no evidence that living in a homosexual influenced enviroment changes gender identity or sexuality at all, in fact studies have shown the exact opposite.

Seriously not everything is a freaking social construct.

You seem to misinterpret what I'm saying. I've already said that influence, perception and experiences play part. Meaning that one situation can mean something different to other people, and not everyone is affected the same way by their environment and social groups. And when you say that the very opposite has been proven to be true, what I can only assume meaning that boys growing up in "homosexual environments" end up straight more often than in "straight environments", etc., that only supports what I say, as it's just as likely to become the opposite from what's expected of you, due to humans seeking individualism.

Another thing you don't seem to realize is that brain structure has been proven to be able to change with maturity. It's been viewed in psychopaths, people with traumatic backgrounds, etc., that the brain is an organ that doesn't have a set path. I'm not just talking about the obvious cases of malnourishment or consumption of drugs, but experiences, emotional trauma, and, not to mention, how your brain can be stimulated in childhood and adolescence to increase your overall intelligence. So what's not to say that one's brain structure and hormonal levels can't alter with environment? You also seem to miss the fact that identical twins can end up with completely different sexualities and even genders. Since we both agree that epigenetics play a small role in the whole thing, that only leaves us with the things I've already brought up.

Your claims are just as valid and have just as much proof as mine. There are numerous sources backing up my arguments. Truth is, we can only still speculate about this, and until something conclusive is reached, we go by what we personally think is more likely.
#23 - anon (12/03/2013) [-]
What sort of environment are you talking about? I grew up "normal" in typical environment where there wasn't really any influence of homosexuality in any way.normal family, played sports, did very boy like stuff. yet I'm gay. I personally don't think it has to do with environment, what causes it? well who knows.

as far as I'm aware, in 2010 they made a mouse go lesbian by removing the gene that controls oestrogen in the brain making the part of the brain that controls sexual preference to develop as though it was male. it didn't prove anything conclusive, but it's a step in the right direction
User avatar #28 - mutzaki (12/03/2013) [-]
Influence, perception and experiences determine this sort of thing.
Now, since everyone is different, and have different perception, conditions can mean different things depending. I mean, growing up playing sports, I assume with other boys your age, could very well influence you in the way that's not expected. Maybe you grew up with gay people around you, idolized someone who's homosexual, etc. I don't know your life story, but some mix between all the things I've already mentioned ended up in you becoming homosexual.
A few things are certain; sexuality can be detected in your brain, as you mentioned, and it's never been linked with genetics. Identical twins very often grow up with different sexualities and gender, probably as a reaction to wanting a sense of individualism.
I think the experiment you mentioned touches more on the subject of epigenetics, which I already said my beliefs on. If it comes through with something really solid and conclusive, and proves that sexuality is strongly affected by it, it's going to make international headlines and I'll alter my thoughts on it.
