well everything's a mutation. Red hair is recessive. Like, there's several genes for hair color and how many of those you have for dominant or recessive will determine your hair color. Red means you have no dominant hair genes, black means you have them all, and everything in between depends on how many are recessive/dominant, and which ones they are.

Although in a simplistic sense you are correct, genes aren't simply BB , Bb or bb (otherwise there wouldn't be enough genotypic variation for the all of the different possible phenotypes) Instead of maybe 2 gene loci (e.g.bb) responsible for eye colour, we could be maybe looking at several loci (e.g. bbbbb), with some positioned on different chromosomes. Each of these alleles may interact differently in different conditions and so we also have to consider factors affecting gene expression (which I won't go into). My basic point is if you read up on Polygenic inheritance and Gene expression to higher than basic education allows, we can quickly see that the simplistic model doesn't work. Having brown eyes would be possible contrary to what the post suggests.

Yes but you can still have brown eyed children, as the parents alleles can be different to those in their gametes.

Its anon here, and may i ask you something?
um, is like. Green more recessive than blue, cuz they are equaly "light" and well.. how come some ppl (like me) have green/brown eyes, ect. I never got this in natureclass. im not the smartest :3

No. Blue eyes are recessive. if they carried brown eyed alleles, which are dominant, they would have brown eyes. Therefore, the ONLY way someone could have blue eyes if they had all blue eyed genes, meaning they cannot pass on brown eye genes. Hence, the child was either adopted or the product of the mom cheating.

That's not true, it's possible for two blue eyed parents to have a brown eyed kid. A Punnet Square does not hold true for eye color, there are other factors that affect it more. There are more than one type of each color, so there can be weak brown eyes or strong blue eyes or weak green eyes, etc. Strong usually dominates weak, but there are other factors at play, so eyes are generally not predictable.
For other things like a cleft chin the teacher's argument would hold true, but eye color is special.

If one of the kids parents was a ginger and the parent had a parent with brown eyes, the kid could get brown eyes, yet both his parents would have blue eyes.
