I dunno, I wouldn't say the shuttle exploded though. There was an explosion, yeah, but the whole shuttle didn't explode.
The orbiter didn't explode. The system as a whole was called the Shuttle.
Just adding in more anecdotes for those interested:
The funny thing was that until pretty much when this picture was taken, nobody was really sure what had happened - some of the problems were pretty obvious, like loss of power in the CM, and they knew that they had been leaking gas (an astronomer on the ground saw a strange cloud in the sky, and looking closer, realized it was the stricken Apollo stack - he called NASA and relayed the information), but besides that, they had no idea what the true nature of the emergency was.
