Well, I think people should have the right to have one. In America we have the second amendment of the constitution, which is the right to keep and bear arms. We have that amendment for a couple of reasons, one of which was so that if our country was ever invaded the citizens would be armed and be able to defend themselves against attackers. Another reason was so that we could defend ourselves against our own government. We had just been in a bloody war against our previous government, the British, so the writers wanted the people to be able to fight back against their own government as well if it ever got to the point where the current regime was no longer desired. For more recent examples of that you can look at all of the uprisings in the middle east.

If you want a bit more practical of an example than overthrowing governments, during riots and after natural disasters when people are looting there have been many cases of people defending their homes, possessions, livelihoods, and/or families against multiple attackers with "assault" weapons.

I could go on but I'm already starting to write a novel and I'm sure other people will give some, if not all, of the things I was going to say.
