You're telling me that the people they're trying to keep inside can just open the door and walk out even though it's locked? Please tell me how that works.

It is against the law to have emergency doors locked from the inside. When you open them an alarm goes off, so students are not actually locked in. That being said, it makes it really easy for a gunman to just wait for all the kids to funnel towards the emergency exit and blast them...

And we have lockdown drills meant for safety precautions if a gunman enters our school.
And by lockdown, we just lock ourselves in our classrooms with the lights off.
