I have to disagree.
I don't have much a problem with funding schools as I do with government's piss poor management of them. The biggest difference between public and private businesses is that private businesses suffer a loss when they are wrong which means they have a strong incentive to do well. Public organizations do not have this which is the primary reason IMO why government is so bad.
This is why free market supporters are more likely to favor a tax funded voucher system so that parents can remove funding from shit schools and give it to schools that work.
And don't even get me started on public unions.....
But anyway, I wouldn't have much of a problem with education being tax funded as long as parents are able to choose where their kids go to school.

"people are compassionate and will help out their fellow man"
I really hope you're not seriously this naive.
Sure, privatizing some things here and there can help a great deal. But to render all public services into a free-for-all is just plain idiotic.
Businesses will inherently seek out profit, and many of those businesses are not afraid to capitalize on the desperations of others. Proof of this? Disaster insurance companies, since forever, a brand of business that can't simply be fixed by the free market because by the time they're revealed to be crap, they've already screwed over a number of people and still have many more on the hook.
Private education facilities don't have to work for efficiency of teaching students either, but rather making parents of said students think they're teaching them well. This is how so many private dojos work in putting parents under the impression they can get their kids a black belt guaranteed or their money back within two months; by giving them that black belt. College professors will make it seem like they're doing a decent job at teaching by implementing a grade curve. Etc., etc.
The biggest flaw to the free market is misinformation; if the public doesn't know it needs fixing, it won't be fixed. Businesses will inherently work for profit because that's the structure a business works for.
crazyolitis has the right idea; you can't just throw the ball one way or another, there has to be a form of balance. Calling it a "middle ground fallacy" and substituting an argument with even more badly placed naivete and conjecture doesn't disprove the fact that some facilities have to be handled by the public in the shape of government and some should have the private hands take a shot at.
Some businesses will shoot for the innovative, and some will cut corners go for cheap, and convince the public otherwise. There are some facilities where you can't afford to risk the latter for.

I really don't feel like having a fucking political argument on a site about funny pictures.
Look, people are not always willing to give money if it doesn't benefit them immediately. People are not good by nature. Sometimes, people have to be forced a little for the greater good. You speak of governments being inefficient, yet most charities are even less efficient. Besides, I am only talking about very limited stuff when it comes to government. I am not asking for communism, just to make sure that everybody gets a decent chance in life, and being able to sustain themselves, even if they don't have work. And no, that does not mean I am saying "give them 10000 dollar a month", I am saying give them just enough to survive.
