The "philosopher's stone" was the actual name of what medieval alchemists tried to create - it supposedly could change lead into gold and grant eternal life. It's a term from real life history and refers to a theoretical magical item. But most modern Americans (especially kids) have never heard of it, and when they hear the word "philosopher" they think about boring old men writing about metaphysics, not about exciting wizards. So they changed it to clarify that the story was about sorcery and magic.

You do know that alchemy isn't part of the primary school syllabus in the UK? English kids weren't all that clued-up on the alchemy relations of the word philosopher either; I doubt that any more children (or adults, for that matter) in England knew about it than they did in America.
The more likely reason for the name change was that while word of mouth was sufficient to drive sales in the UK (so the book name wouldn't matter so much), This couldn't be counted on across the pond, so the name had to appeal more to buyers uninformed of how hyped the book was over here.

This was a decision made by Americans.
For that exact reason.

I'm an American in college and before a few years ago I'd never heard the term 'philosophers stone'. And even then, when I did hear it, it was on a show and I assumed they were just making up some name. It's a term that's never brought up, regarding a pseudo science. Kids aren't taught alchemy in school, how are people supposed to know what a philosopher's stone is?

Maybe not everywhere but it is something that isn't that uncommon. It's in Indiana Jones stuff, its in a lot of classic literature that some people would be reading in school, there was Harry Potterthough it was not the American version you still see it around, there was a popular book series about Nicholas Flamel called the Alchemyst, it's an item in a lot of videogames, it's in Witchfcraft, Castlevania, Final Fantasy etc. And it's not like everyone sticks to just American culture all the time. Like you said FMA, super popular, philosopher's stone

but yeah, it's in a lot of fiction.
the problem isn't what americans know, it's what Americans are perceived to know.
Who-ever published the books in america apparently decided that american children aren't well read enough to know what it is, or intellegent enough to want to read a book with a long word in the title.

So in short......Americans are fucking dumb.
