It is leucism, but they have no pigment, unlike albinism, which is reduced melanin

That indeed sounds promising, but there are a few issues to be resolved, one of which is caused by it:

1. How to get the whole world to change their reactors? It tends to take a lot of capital just building one, and that is not worth the gains in waste reduction according to corporations and/or governments, or at least many of them.

2. Even so, safety is still an issue. Even though the chances of it happening are smaller, the effects are very large when it does. This issue remains a problem, at least in the public eye.

3. Finally, even if it is reduced, there still is some. The original issue, though limited, remains. And if the world would indeed turn to those kinds of reactors, there would be a lot more waste since there are a lot more reactors, so the effect still remains.

Those are the main reasons why it might actually not work. The new system you introduced me to did make me more acceptable of nuclear reactors as a concept: it is much better than the traditional version. But the problem is not the specifics. It is the basic concept, because it works with radioactive waste and relies on dwindling resources. As far as I see it still, unless a reactor with absolute or near enough to 0 radioactive waste has been invented and proven to work so, I will not be completely in its favour. But it is likely we have found the wonder cure atomic fusion by or before that point in engineering history is reached.

Also known lithium reserves would last like 2500-3000 years and lithium in the sea would last 150 billion years. Scientists are already trying to reduce the size and cost of fusion plants using alternative methods to tokamaks which is what we use now, however the new designs are nowhere near as advanced as tokamaks.

Ok so, a fusion reactor would be a massive investment, but its an investment that secures energy independence. When something goes wrong with a fusion reactor it stops almost immediately. Fission needs to have a super critical amount of nuclear mass to sustain itself so if something goes wrong and the proper safety checks don't work the reaction can continue without human intervention. Fusion requires very specific conditions to operate and you only feed in as much nuclear mass as you need, which means if something goes wrong it shuts down immediately. The radioactive waste from fusion last a fraction of the time fission's does, most of it could go to medical treatments and the rest would remain dangerous for only 50 years, after 100 its low level waste and after 300 its got the same radioactivity as coal ash.
