People not voting are more of the problem than people that vote.
If people actually do any amount of research, and vote for a candidate with whom they actually have some views in common, instead of refusing to vote simply because they don't like either of the two most likely candidates, we'd be less likely to get shit candidates.
As it stands currently, it's almost certain to be Trump vs. Clinton. Which is fucked up, because by literally every poll I've seen, Sanders is wiping the floor with Clinton, who is adapting to this by literally changing every stance she had to mirror what Sanders is saying.
But because the majority of people have no idea what a Caucus or a Primary is, he's not going to get the Democratic nomination, because the old fucks who have time to caucus and who support Clinton outnumber the old fucks who support Sanders.

True enough. Ironically, it's the votes in states that have fewer people that count for more. Each state has a minimum of three electoral votes (typically distributed in a "winner take all" pattern). Montana has only 3 electoral votes, but they have far more electoral votes per capita than any other state, meaning that the votes of each individual person influence the election more directly than those of the citizens of any other state.

tl;dr: The Electoral College is a fucked up system. Direct Democracy for Presidential elections would theoretically be ideal, but it would take forever to actually get anything done due to the sheer number of votes to count.
