As long as you show you're not afraid of these guys then no one will be laughing, taking a beating and still showing no fear is something people respect. If these are your friends/ ex friends anyway then you will likely know them well and hopefully it won't come to violence. People like this tend to be pussies anyway, showing you have no fear of a fight will make them think twice because only people with mental issues want to resort straight to violence. This advice worked for my younger brother at his school as hes just moved to secondary school (high school, im english) and it worked for me when my dad told me it.

that's easy, have a three strike rule, starting whenever, if a person does three things to you that you consider to be "testing you" or generally negative, go into dick mode with them, when they're just stood doing nothing, rugby tackle them to the ground, if they're carrying something, knock it out of their hand and just walk away like it didn't happen, just be an asshole, it will stop, i guarantee it.

These people sound like they're testing you. I usually see with my friends now and again they like to test eachother on how far they can push eachother before shit goes too far and they end up fighting. Its not a loop you want to get into, you need to show them where you stand exactly, if they nudge, hit, take the piss out of you then you need set them straight right away and this doesn't have to be violence, just a form of intimidation to show you won't take their shit. I ended up nose to nose with one of my friends and he respected me afterwards for not taking shit, you're like me in that respect (not wanting to be violent) unfortunately it may come to that but do not back down even if it means taking a beating.
