Speaking as a Canadian (gay marriage is legal and thus not much of an issue for me), I think the reason that everyone's pushing for gay marriage specifically is that a civil union doesn't have the same connotations as a marriage.

Marriage - traditionally, anyway - is a really strong bond between two people who love each other and who want to spend their lives together. A civil union is just so impersonal and bureaucratic that it would almost be another form of discrimination.

There's also the whole legal aspect as well. Marriage is a longstanding tradition that has a lot of representation and presence in the legal world, and to get the same treatment (to wit: rights) with a civil union requires a lot of work and monetary investment on the part of the couple.
