It depends on the rules decided upon before hand. If you go by WPA 8-ball standard, yes he lost. "The eight ball may be called only after the shot on which the shooter’s group has been cleared from the table." Taken from WPA standards. So in other words, the shooters group, whether solids or stripes, must be off the table before a shot on the eight can be called and made. Or more simply: You can't call the eight ball if you still have your group of balls on the table.

From what I've seen the rule on calling pockets is really optional in most settings. When I've gone to play or watch pool I've never seen it used.

He could have called it out loud but didn't point at it. As long ass all of your other balls are in before thee 8 ball then it works. It looks like that was thee case so he won.
