Honestly you have to know what your doing with a katana, because most people would get it entangled in sinew and bone, and break the blade. It's not a delicate weapon, but it does take skill to use it properly. As for upkeep, a sword of that nature takes almost as much time and effort to keep in shape as a gun. You can't just keep hacking with it, and each strike can dull the blade in an unskilled hand. Once the Katana is blunt, you have to use the stabbing point.. and then that increases the chance of the blade breaking. For Melee against undead, it's best to use a bludgen(Bat, Mace, Pipe, anything with heft and can crush bone.).

i agree the upkeep for a katana is rigorous but to keep the other blade as useful it would be about the same if not more so it wouldn't just turn into a very heavy cricket like bat , katanas dont simply break when slicing through flesh & bone (when properly made as i said), and the wielder of the katana needs to be quite skilled with it when combating trained enemies not mindless meat bags
