Yes, let me never again be sad or express distress because there is something worse out there. I hate that statement, it is absurd. If that is your way of consoling people, I suggest you go practice something else.

And you took the the entirely opposite way. I meant it as, "hey it is a bad situation but theres worse than can happen and you still have quite a bit going for what you have take value in that while you still can".

*know
and I am one. Electrical engineer, to be exact. All the engineers at my school were top-notch, high-SAT-scoring, brilliant motherfuckers who played Magic: The Gathering, Counter-Strike, DnD, strategy games and watched Korean cartoons all day instead of getting wasted or having sex. These fellows all graduated and got jobs at National Semiconductor, National Grid, Texas Instruments, NASA, Motorola, General Electric....

I ended up at first at American Power Conversion at a location with 300 geeks all working on designing software simulations of various scenarios of our products and doing tests and software patches and regression tests and shit. There was ONE TEAM of THREE PEOPLE who actually were in charge of testing and throwing the switch on a 15kVA unit to see if they could blow up the device. So of course there are cool aspects of engineering, but for the most part they sit in offices and model on computers and are fucking nerds who are brilliant at math and socially awkward.

Can any fellow engineers back me up on this? How many of you structural or mechanical engineers out there actually go on the factory floor or go into a fucking cave to see if the metal screw fixtures you designed hold up under heavy use? Those things are simulated and tested the shit out of by testing companies before going to manufacture. Maybe industrial engineers have to do that, but otherwise we're all in offices.

That sounds pretty awesome! How do like your job at the American Power Conversion? Also, is that where you originally anticipated working at, after college?

I'm a chemical engineer, in college still, and I'm not sure where I plan on ending up at the moment... there are a prolific amount of sub-divisions for chemical engineering. I'm exploring the program, but I can't wait to start working over the summer at my university's nuclear research reactor.

I actually only did an internship at APC. The engineers were all super chill and loved imparting their wisdom on us interns. But the work was super boring, and it was a 1.5 hour drive each way. Pay was ridiculous for an intern. Anyway, I didn't get a job there after school because they changed CEOs and had to fire a bunch of people. I ended up working at Aware (a company that designs modems). I was a QC-engineer and it was the most boring thing ever, and a 2 hour drive each day. I quit after a month, moved to Germany, started a band and I program websites freelance for some serious cash (€60/hr) and only work part-time (15hrs/wk) and do music the rest of the time! But an engineering degree is worth its weight in gold. It shows companies you can solve problems and you stick it out to the end.

My best friend in college was chem eng. We both went to WPI in Massachusetts. He went and got his masters from Brown and I'm actually not sure where he works now, but his company sends him to Germany once or twice a year for conferences or something and this time he's got an extra few days to come visit me - I'm super excited!
