Arthur Brooks, the author of "Who Really Cares," says that "when you look at the data, it turns out the conservatives give about 30 percent more." He adds, "And incidentally, conservative-headed families make slightly less money."

And he says the differences in giving goes beyond money, pointing out that conservatives are 18 percent more likely to donate blood. He says this difference is not about politics, but about the different way conservatives and liberals view government.

"You find that people who believe it's the government's job to make incomes more equal, are far less likely to give their money away," Brooks says. In fact, people who disagree with the statement, "The government has a basic responsibility to take care of the people who can't take care of themselves," are 27 percent more likely to give to charity.

Thank you good sir. I have liberal friends that are always like Conservatives/Republicans don't care about other people they are all self centered, and it pisses me off every time.

I know that feel completely. I say we Conservatives (cause Republicans now are just Democrats light) even in theory. "We the people" will take care of "we the people".

Government is only a necessary evil which should be kept to as minimal as we can.

That's a pretty bold statement. To use another famous quote regarding our government, it is "of the people, by the people, for the people." You seem to have the "by the people" down, but it seems like you forget that government is "of the people," especially at local levels, and is in fact "for the people" as well. Government provides services for people who need it, and to call it an evil is equivalent to calling all charities evil. Are there aspects of the government, or some charities, that do not work the way we expect them to? Yes, but both are overall god entities.

I think you have a pretty valid argument for the most part. But I think the big difference between the services provided by charities and by government is that the government goes beyond just charity work. Charities don't have the authority to start stepping on the toes of our liberty in various ways.

Don't get me wrong. The government is necessary and you're right, it does do a lot of good. We NEED government. I'm just of the mindset that the federal government's authority needs to be reigned in so that localities, which understand their situations far better, can deal with their affairs (as the country was meant to be organized). Our representatives can become fairly detached after a while and forget our needs over their own.
