"*but* people are much more easily able to defended themselves resulting in less overall deaths."
I'm not being argumentative but there is no evidence to suggest that. As of now there is reason to believe that it's the other way around. Even if that were true, that doesn't mean all guns should be banned. People seem to be very uneasy about addressing the fact that unrestricted access to handguns and automatic weapons could very easily allow gangs and other violent criminals to obtain weapons with extreme ease. Even mandatory firearm safety courses and a permit requirement for firearms could be used to reduce access to violent criminals. My point is that the utter rejection of the idea that the current method of firearms sales could be causing more deaths is making any debate on new laws impossible. I am not talking about banning all guns or even restricting guns that you can get, it is impossible to require that a gun be stored in a safe, that you have trigger locks in the home, requiring safety courses, permits and other methods which make access more limited in a way that law abiding citizens could still get firearms of any type but anyone with a history of violent crime is immediately barred from getting a firearm because they will not be eligible to take a firearms acquisition license course due to said record.
The argument for many has absolutely nothing to do with reason anymore, it's just opposing views that will sling around any bullshit anecdote to try and garner support.

The cites for this pic are at the bottom of it.
It shows that for every homicides/accidents/a death resulting from firearm, there are about 84.5~ cases of self defense with a firearm.
But due to the fact that it is hard to gather info on areas of America that have a total gun ban(There are not, because 2nd amendment), it is a bit difficult to show the true effect of it.
