The Sun used a telephone poll. It is unclear how the sample was selected to be interviewed. It seems unlikely that it was a complete random sample. The headline is based of off how much they agree with a statement. This statement was "I have a lot of sympathy with young Muslims who leave the UK to join fighters in Syria" 5% said they had a lot of sympathy. 14.5% said they had some sympathy. and the remaining 71.5% said they had no sympathy whatsoever. Even then the question does not even mention Jihad or ISIS. It doesn't even mention on which sidethe the young Muslims leaving to fight in Syria are. If they are fighting for or against ISIS. Is it very likely that some of the people polled believed the question pertained to those fighting against ISIS. The word "Sympathy" in the question is also controversial as to some it may mean "share the same opinion" and to others could mean "understanding them on an emotional level". Overall I don't think it's a very great poll and the healdline "1 in 5 Brit Muslims' sympathy for jihadis" is crazily extrapolated from the data. Don't be a sheep and believe everything you read, take everything with a grain of salt. It is the internet.

It isn't just about ISIS though.

One can share similar beliefs of extremism without being a supporter of ISIS.

Peaceful or not, that doesn't mean they still don't support dangerous and archaic views and as a result look the other way when those views are instituted in a regime.

If 1.6 billion Muslims wanted you dead, you'd be fucking dead. No ifs, ands or buts - you would be a headless corpse six feet under - if you were even lucky enough for 1.6 apparent barbarians to bury you.

Not really. The west is still way too strong but in another couple of generations with how this is going it could be a different story

Well there are about 3.3 millions Muslims in the USA right now. Maybe a proportion of them harbour some ill-will for the "great melting pot", but surely if they hated the country in any significant numbers, they'd act on it. They'd be crushed, simply erased by the US police and military, and the ball of all out war would be set rolling. World War Three would erupt in response and we'd all be in real, real trouble.

But that's simply not the case.

Understanding the situation here requires a more detailed look there. The problem, to me, is not about power; strength, defence and military are less relevant than it appears. I stand by the notion that the problem is more about the response of the West to issues in the Middle East and to terrorism, and also with the past actions of the USA and its allies. It's becomes part of a culture thing over there. We've been pretty much professionally invading, manipulating, pillaging and assimilating Middle Eastern countries now since the Cold War - led by America. Many of them believe that, to the West, their countries are just big playgrounds for testing weapons or playing with political regimes. Both the Hussein and Gaddafi governments - both in areas now occupied the most intensely by ISIS, might I point out - were helped into power by the USA, and look at the abuses their people ended up facing. Look at the divisions and struggles both countries still face. Now I'm not saying that the areas would be problem-free without American intervention, because in fact they'd likely be the same or worse off, but it's absolutely no wonder that terrorist organisations find it so easy to recruit people using anti-Western propaganda. And they know exactly who to target in order to achieve this.

Every single country has a percentage of the population who are weak-willed and ignorant. I bet that people you know spring to mind in decent numbers when I say this. They're the easiest group to manipulate and are often used to create an illusion of a united populace. That's what ISIS want. Their biggest achievement is scaring us this much with such a small force. Look how paranoid we are! Look at how eager some people are to declare others as terrorists just for being brown. They're playing us for fools, and using our hate to make their ideas look more reasonable. They're manipulating the populations under their control, and they're manipulating our populations through our own media, because the second they make a move here, the papers go absolutely crazy. ISIS has smart but leaders, seeking only power and glory for themselves. They have fanatical idiots with cheap Russian weapons and a burning hatred for an enemy that exists - for the most part - in their imaginations, and because both sides see their opponents as so much bigger and more intimidating than they really are, it becomes self-fulfilling prophecy, gearing up for a larger-scale war than was ever necessary.

Please, take in or discard as much of what I've said as you like - I don't care whether or not this is a popular comment or not, or if it receives agreement or not - all I ask is that we all keep examining the situation from as many perspectives as we can. Keep open minds and remember that we're really not all that different from our Muslim brethren. I, for one, would like all our nations to gather and face each other - without fear - and exchange handshakes. But I know that it will take many, many years and many, many good people to make this happen.

I think that there is definitely a significant muslim population that does not want to go to war. However if world war 3 does happen and it's everyone vs Muslims, the Muslims would lose. Their way of life and culture and religion would end. To me that's the only thing that's stopping the radical Muslims from initiating a full scale war and that could change as their numbers increase and ours diminish

I don't think the radicals number even close to enough to consider it, and I think that it would take some very, very drastic changes in circumstances for it to become the case. It would certainly take the efforts of a lot more groups than just ISIS.

Congratulations you just dramatically over simplified the social geopolitical climate that is strictly related to the Islamic Middle East.

That was kind of the point - parody of the whole "Islam hates us" false mentality that this site seems to have taken on. It's a ludicrous idea perpetuated by people as dumb as the ISIS fighters who also stand for a ludicrous idea.
