What the shit, How does an Irishman come across Southern US ideology lol, Personally I find it a little racist. I mean, I'm sure there are modern day Nazi party members that are not all aryan brotherhood and preaching of racial purity, but I wouldn't fly that flag. But then again, everyone here argues it is a cultural icon, it is even part of the official state flag.

I'm a Rockabilly, I got quite into 50's Rock'n'roll and blues etc in my teens, growing up listening to Johnny cash and stuff, he became one of my favourite artists and I just never cared about people's opinion really, I wear the flag for my own reasons, representing my love for Rockabilly/Rock'n'roll music and it's origins and I dunno i'm not ashamed to wear it just because 99% of people cry because they're too ignorant to even think I might not actually be a huge supporter of slavery and hate black people. People will always get butthurt over everything and if you want to please anybody then you simply wouldn't be you. Plus I think the flag is beautiful looking, it just appeals to me

I live in Mississippi, pretty much everyone has a confederate flag. My brother had one in his room, I don't own one myself but many neighbors and other friends fly theres. I am reading all this, surprised, does the rest of the south/US not do this?
User avatar #83 - dangler (08/27/2014) [-]
I live in Mississippi and I regularly see black people (mostly older men) with that flag on their hats, trucks, etc.
User avatar #84 - xbyronx (08/27/2014) [-]
I live in Carrier (not to far from Biloxi) And yeah, black people do stunt the rebel flag a lot. Blacks were a large percentage of confederate fighters.

They're dangerous to have in the more ethnic areas of North USA.
I honestly don't care if everyone who flies one says "Its a symbol of blah blah blah". It stands for a rebellion (which in itself is not so bad) against emancipation. The states who flew that flag flew it for the sole purpose of keeping their slaves. There was no difference between the Confederate Constitution and the Union Constitution except for the fact that the Confederacy allowed for slaves. Slavery was the first and most heavily detailed item in every states declaration of secession.
To me, flying a confederate flag in modern America is like me flying a Nazi flag in modern Germany. Even if I say its a symbol of a more powerful Germany, it still has everything else that went along with the state that operated under said banner
User avatar #48 - xbyronx (08/27/2014) [-]
Agreed, I wouldn't fly one, but I fight for the rights of others to fly one. Free country, 'murica, etc.
User avatar #49 - xbyronx (08/27/2014) [-]
EDIT: i WOULD fight for the rights, i do not currently nor have I done so.

State sovereignty thing that you omitted which was arguably a bigger cause of the rebellion than slavery.
User avatar #41 - howunexpected (08/27/2014) [-]
If the South wanted sovereignty, why didn't they say ANYTHING about it until they were under threat of having their slaves taken away?
User avatar #82 - thatoneiranianguy (08/27/2014) [-]
That's a very over simplification as there was a lot of animosity between the Southern and Northern states decades before the war began.

As for your comment about the Constitutions between the U.S. and Confederacy, they weren't all that different, yes, but the U.S. Constitution did have clauses that permitted ownership and importation of slavery:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_the_United_States#Constitution_of_the_United_States

The war primarily had to do with States Rights, Taxes, and Slavery. Essentially in that order, among other things - those were the primary concerns. There's a reason many southerners who were not even slave owners fought in the war. Most weren't concerned with slavery, they were concerned by the harshness that Northern politics and economics were putting on the Southern economy for the last several decades.

Yeah you'd be quite surprised how most people view the flag and how much it can be mistaken for being racist or whatever even if said person wears/has it for completely different reasons. I live in Ireland and well..you won't see a confederate flag that often here either, actually you'll never see one apart from the 1 on my jacket lol. It is a shame how everyone's first impression is huge racist slavery lover and hates on it cause all in all it is actually quite a nice looking flag
