As a general rule, any ammo that is good enough for taking game works great as home defense. Granted, most pistols are limited in that regard. It's still kind of idiotic to spend $5 a round on all this fancy shit.

You're the most sensible person on this site on just about every topic, and I love you for it. You're totally right about bears, too. Black bears are usually between 130-300 pounds. You can fight them off, but not kill them by hand (not that killing them matters). A small Grizzly is 800, often topping 1300. DO NOT try to fuck with a grizzly, ever.

Actually, you shouldn't respond to a bear based on species, but based on behavior. If the bear is hunting you, the only solution is to fight as hard as you can, as a fight isn't worth the energy expenditure to get a meal. If the bear perceives you as a threat (is with cubs, is with a kill etc) the best option is to cover your vitals, play dead, and pray, as that bear will not stop until you are no longer a threat (dead).

Black bears don't hunt people unless they are diseased/ starved. They are actually listed as herbivores, primarily eating fruits and grains.
