That's what I thought until I rewatched it not too long ago. Seriously in the cell saga he was being such a whiny pacifist pushover. And kept saying over and over again how he doesn't want to fight even as his friends and family are being eviscerated by Cell and Cell Jr.'s.
The he transforms and is cool for about half a second but as Cell beats up on him, he gives up so fucking easily and just complains how he's too weak and he can't do it, giving up any hope of defeating Cell at every corner. He's so pathetic to the point where Goku is literally screaming at him to stop being such a pansy and summon the strength he needs.

Gohan was so infuriating during the Cell Saga, so I standby my point that Ultimate Gohan is the coolest version. Even though he is still tainted as he did literally nothing to get those ultimate powers besides sit on his ass.
