It's funny listening to the obviously English actors trying to sound American because.. it seems that the easiest way for an Englishman to sound American is to growl as low as possible when they speak.
Ever noticed that? They never have normal sounding voices when they try to sound American, it's all low and deep.

I think the difficult thing for British speakers to replicate in the "American" accent is the 'hard R'. Pronouncing R like some of us do is not that far from actually growling, so speakers unfamiliar with it can easily overdo it and end up sounding gruff and angry. Which, I guess, might affect American stereotypes.
Sort of like how your general "Canadian" accent (which, in my experience, is a mix between Atlantic and Ontarian) emphasizes every letter in each word and exaggerates the pronunciation of 'ou' sounds, as in "oot and aboot", which implies slowness and stupidity. For the record, I am Canadian, and I know several people who speak like that, but the most "Canadian" sounding guy I ever knew was Finnish. He also liked to say "eh?" a lot.

I'd imagine you guys feel flattered whenever a citizen of America, the greatest country in the world acknowledges the existence of your good for nothing country.
