Respect is not a universal thing. though. Respect is earned through merit, skill and ones attributes. Its not just something to be lavishly bestowed upon anyone and everything.
Sure, the default towards a stranger might be a modicom of universal respect, but thats is instantly taken away when that stranger does something to warrent disrespect. I'de say that Islam has done its fair share of disrespectful behavior.
