If you measure the models (and assume a space marine is 3 meters tall, which is on the lower end), the bolters are about 1.5 meters long, with the heavy bolter sitting at 3-4 meters. But if you look at pictures, the bolters are usually about 0.5-1 meters.

Forgot a suitable picture for Chaos.
User avatar #90 - krasnogvardiech (10/16/2014) [-]
Up next is the single largest threat to the Imperium and to the ordered universe as we know it. Chaos.

In 40k, there exists a dimension outside the laws of reality where souls and emotions and psychic energy hold more sway than anything. Things that prey on souls include the Daemons, which are creatures beyond reality who would like nothing more than to kill, eat, rape, mutate, change the very structure of your body, devour your soul or some combination thereof. Thankfully they can't exist in reality unless they find a physical form. When the do acquire physical form, needless to say they are near impossible to stop unless you drown them with firepower.

The corruptive capability of Chaos means that it draws sway all the sick-minded, evil, weak of will, or simply unfortunate simply by its very existence. These people form cults, secreted away where if they're intelligent they'll be beyond immediate Imperial retribution. For the most part, if they're lucky, they'll piddle about in rituals they barely know anything about and make a mess, or perhaps worm their way into the Imperial hierachy and corrupt it from within to make the Imperium weaker. If they're unlucky, they will succeed in their rituals and their patron deity of Chaos - there being four; Khorne the god of violence, rage and blood, Nurgle the god of pestilence, disease and death, Tzeentch the god of knowledge, magic and plots and Slaanesh the god of sensation, excess and lust - will take notice, and that never ends well.
Aside from the corrupted, most often whom formerly were loyal Imperial warriors, there are the Chaos Space Marines. For the most part, they were those left alive of the Traitor Legions after the defeat of Horus the Arch-traitor at the height of the Horus Heresy some eleven millenia ago. They have since fled to the Eye of Terror, a section in space where reality and the Warp overlap in a massive wound in reality.

Next are the Xenos factions - or aliens, to put it simply.
In the eyes of the Imperium, what is not human and unwilling to serve the Emperor is to be dealt a swift death. Considering what lies in wait to prey on the Imperium, that is a fairly reasonable notion.
And all of these listed factions are at war with each other as much as they are with Chaos and the Imperium. Unlike those two, they are not unified.
The greatest xenos threat enroaching are the Tyranids, as pictured in this image. A race swarming in from beyond the stars in fleets of numbers too great to count, they are swooping down to consume the Imperium for its biomass, to add to its numbers where the Tyranid Swarm will move on to the next galaxy upon the devouring of all biomass.
Arguably the second greatest threat in numbers if not in outright volatility is the greenskin menace, the Orks. To put it lightly, they are an infestation of idiotic, psychic green-hued spacefaring barbarians who reproduce by spores and have technology that by all rights should not work, and yet due to a gesalt psychic field they exude, they can alter reality about them as they see fit. Orks being Orks, they use it to make the belief that 'Red wunz go fasta!' is actually fact. And thus, a red-painted Orky trukk will indeed go faster than a yellow-painted one. All of their technology is as such - if they believe it works, it works. They also get bigger and stronger the more they live and fight and enjoy themselves.
The next are the Eldar - a race of what is essentially space elves, both major kinds of which have technology, longevity and psyker resistance far in excess of humankind. One version live in planet-sized ships and travel about the galaxy predicting future events and altering them to their own fitting, while the other live in a city lodged inside another dimension, acting as murderous nymphomaniac pirates, enslaving and generally torturing whatever they please to try prolong their own psychic suffering.

Continued.
#99 - krasnogvardiech (10/16/2014) [-]
Tyranids, Orks and the two kinds of Eldar are covered.

The Necrontyr are a race of beings that were caged in bodies of necrodermis and had their souls sucked away from them by physical god-like insensate masses of sentient energy formed at the moment of creation named the C'tan. Their technology is literal aeons old, and thus far is still greatly in excess of Imperial tech. Their goal is the destruction of all sentient life to feed their C'tan masters, and for this reason the Tyranids avoid them like the plague - primarily because the Necrontyr do not have any biomass to consume.

Next and last is the Tau. They are a newly-risen-to-power faction of aliens which have nearly no presence in the Warp and have comparitively to the Imperium, somewhat advanced technology, consisting of plasma rifles and battle suits galore. They take after IRL communist values rather well, wanting to indoctrinate all of them for their Greater Good. They are slowly expanding through space near the borders of the Imperial pseudo-empire of Ultramar, and probably will get their shit pushed in at some point.
User avatar #100 - krasnogvardiech (10/16/2014) [-]
And that's that. Any questions?
User avatar #104 - arkanios (10/16/2014) [-]
I have one: Can you also describe the different types of soldiers of the Imperial military? Like the Guardsmen, the Kriegs Who look the coolest to me, mainly because of the gasmasks and german soldier style , techpriests if they count, I'm not too familiar on Warhammer myself and I only know what I've read from FJ and any others?
User avatar #103 - ashedust (10/16/2014) [-]
Whelp... I believe you that it would weigh a ton to compile all this info.

So basically, everyone hates eachother. The humans are the babies of the universe and the necrontyr are the murderous and surprisingly spry grandpas of the universe. Orks are the barbarians. Elves are the pompous fucks who do whatever. Chaos is the grand evil which has a ever present presence cause everything is always in chaos. and the Tau are trying to establish a foothold in the universe by means of superiority.

Did I miss anything?
User avatar #105 - krasnogvardiech (10/16/2014) [-]
It wouldn't weight a ton at all! I'm just giving you the abridged version.

All in all though, that summary is pretty much that. There's even more to it - even a collection of series of novels where Black Library, GW's printing front, officially publishes works by the various authors.

Also, quite a few videogames.

Pirate it like the rest of us.

There's a metric ton of backstory and lore I could go into. Literally, if you compiled absolutely every piece of information in the setting and published it into paper, I'm fairly certain it would end up weighing a metric ton. I could hire myself out as 40kexplain, since dndexplain doesn't do the subject justice.

The tabletop game is just individual skirmishes and the like, not much more than 40 or so figures a side. The standard wargame's big brother, Apocalypse, has better rules more streamlined for huge-scale fights and you're allowed Titans on the battlefield if you can home-make them. Only so much they supply and all that.

But then again, GW charges an arm, leg, testicle, firstborn son and a quarter of a soul per model (or they may as well do) so collecting isn't really feasible if you out-and-out purchase them. Ebay and the like have a whole load of them though if you don't mind second-hand.

#56 - krasnogvardiech (10/15/2014) [-]
Let me introduce to you the Baneblade, then.

Primary superheavy tank of the Imperial Guard, weighing in at three hundred and nineteen tons, with a main gun barrel length of ten metres. Secondary chassis gun being the Demolisher Cannon, a somewhat shorter, wider gun which is meant to launch anti-emplacement shells at whatever happens to be the subject of the targeter and/or commander's ire that particular day.

This is not counting the secondary guns, which by themselves make up around a whole battery's worth of firepower unto themselves.

Pictured is a well-made model of one.
User avatar #57 - ashedust (10/15/2014) [-]
Damn... that sounds like the "fuck you and everything you stand for" of tanks.
#58 - krasnogvardiech (10/15/2014) [-]
It pretty much is.

The best part? In the Standard Template Construct fragment where it was supposedly recorded, it was listed as a 'light' tank.

That means somewhere out there is the blueprint of an even bigger and more heavily armored tank. To the point where it overshadows even that glorious metal monstrosity of a moving fortress.

Idleness. Idleness breeds heresy. As well as an open mind.

We have a few in our ranks who prefer not to use flamers, but that's not important. Flamers are the answer to anything. Got cultists yelling in the streets? Trial by fire. Got orcs trying to invade a planet? Hey, those spores sure look flammable. Eldar trying to hatch foul xenos schemes? They're not going to have much of a chance when their hiding places are on fire.

ah thanks. never new Warhammer had such a detailed lore. so quick follow up question would the female version of space marines (can't remember their faction name) be put in a Dreadnought or is it limited to the space marines?
User avatar #59 - atomschlumpf (10/16/2014) [-]
Just to add a little to kasnogvardiech:

As he said, the Penitent Engine is more of a form of punishment or self-punishment. While the Dreadnought is a form in which the fallen Battlebrother can still serve the Emperor even after death, the Sister strapped to the Penitent Engine seeks to die in battle. That of course makes them powerful war engines, since they seek to repent their sins in battle they fight relentless and without a sense of self-preservation and thus they can carve up countless enemies before succumbing to their wounds. That is also the reason why they are strapped to the front unarmored, they are actively searching their death in battle (I know, its kinda bullshit because one shot to the head can take out the entire thing but it looks cooler and also boobs I guess)

The Dreadnought on the other hand is different. They are seen as the most venerated and sacred members of a Space Marine chapter, as in life they already were experienced veterans. Since the sarcophagus in which the broken body of the marine is entombed is heavily armored a Dreadnought can be very very old and even when his metal body is destroyed the sarcophagus with the marine can be recovered and given a new Dreadnought body. As such, old Dreadnoughts are often questioned for guidance by the Chapter Master of their chapter. One particular Dreadnought, Bjorn the Fell Handed (pictured above, the fucker with the big blue claws and the grim warriors in the background) is the oldest living being in the Imperium. With over 10.000 years of age he is so old that he was still around during the Great Crusade, when the Emperor was still walking among his children and the Imperium was not a place of civil war and struggling for survival.
#45 - krasnogvardiech (10/15/2014) [-]
What you are referring to are the Sisters of Battle, the Adepta Sororitas by the 'official' Imperial name. They are the only thing resembling a military force the Ecclesiarchy is allowed to have ever since Goge Vandire's Reign of Blood - and even then, the premise of the force is to skirt around a loophole where it states that the Ecclesiarchy may have no men under arms.
The Sororitas are ordinary (meaning unaugmented) human women picked from the recruits of the Schola Progenium, what basically amounts to a huge organization which houses several academies all over the Imperium. It takes in the children of Imperial heroes who died in battle. As you can expect, there are a lot of Progenium recruits.
From this point onward the Noviates are turned into warrior-crusader-zealots who have a training regime that a modern Special Forces unit would be in awe of, sometimes to the point of self-mutilation for the purpose of pain endurance training. The common fashion is to bleach their hair and cut it in a pageboy fashion uniformly, and after that various tattoos so long as they are sufficiently Imperial wherever they so wish.

They indeed have their own version, though it does not require the mortal wounding of the Sister of Battle in question. Despite this, the Sororitas organization still puts it into practice. It is a Pentinent Engine, piloted by a Repentia or a disgraced and/or dishonored Sister of Battle which is not yet ready to go to the Emperor.
It's less heavily armoured than the Dreadnought, but less extensive in the technology also.

User avatar #1874 to #1873 - krasnogvardiech (12/24/2014) [-]
Hold on. Nothing happens that easy.

First off, start defining things. Which media do you want to shut down? What do you mean by 'media', the liberal trash of the U.S or the somewhat more honest organizations of the rest of the world?

The world doesn't revolve around the states. And of course it does, that's how fascism works. Not a bad system either, if not for the laziness and spinelessness of those involved.
User avatar #1875 to #1874 - syrianassassin ONLINE (12/24/2014) [-]
the first one is as you said.

as you can see the CIA-SIL are spreading fast because the media support. the only way to shut them down is to close the media in iraq and syria.

but of course the world will go public outcry/
User avatar #1876 to #1875 - krasnogvardiech (12/24/2014) [-]
How would that work? Media in that region consists of people on ham radios reporting things to one another. Except for air traffic controllers and the like, but then again word of mouth is the primarily relied-on source. And you know how bad that is. Unless I'm wrong and they really do look to obviously edited propaganda as the truth.
User avatar #1877 to #1876 - syrianassassin ONLINE (12/24/2014) [-]
this is the problem. the CIA-SIL got stronger because the media. the only way to clear them is first close it then eradicate the area they live in.

another one had a bad guy with an ak....the spets ran up, and kicked under the gun twice...first time unloading the magazine the second cocking out the chambered round.....the guy was in a state of shock...how did the spets do that....the spets took his rifle....reloaded it, gave it back to the guy....double kicked again to unload it...the guy was impressed...then the spets killed him

Strength 10 allows you to hold and effectively use a weapon ~15 kilograms in each hand. Since there is no way you are able to dual-weild heavy minigun laser weapons, they will have to be systems similar to an RCW mounted on submachinegun frames. Since they're laser weapons, recoil will be minimal.
The focusing and optics will be shot to hell right quick. About 30 seconds of sustained fire equalling 600 full-power shots, 3500 half-power shots.

Gatling lasers akimbo is just impractical. They're weapons designed to be operated with two or more hands, with the reloading and such.
Pistols are much more easily managed. In that case it's tricky, but not impossible to reload with just one hand.
