Probably because the characters in the comics tend to come off as concepts first and characters second. Starfire was clearly something someone came up with first and the personality came second, but in the cartoon they needed to give her a more suitable personality, so they sort of warped together a load of typical tropes into a very unique-feeling character.

Similar for the rest of them. I kinda get the feeling the people that go into writing comics tend to do so because they enjoy concepts and action more than characters themselves. I mean, why is it that the extents, powers, and images of the superheroes tend to stay pretty consistent across the board but their personalities fluctuate from writer to writer? I assume it's probably because the writers have a much firmer grasp on their abilities and concepts than on their personalities. Frank Miller's Batman is an entirely different entity to that in the animated series.

I suppose that is to both the benefit and the detriment of comics. On the plus side there's more of a chance of you enjoying the character because you might run into a version of them you really like, but at the same time... there's never really enough of them and it hurts to see the same body, skillset, and name preserved from writer to writer but their personalities seem to not be as important in terms of their identities... which I suppose is probably why Comic Books are equated to Greek Myths (I mean... how many different kinds of Hercules have there been where the person is different but the iconic concept is the same).

It's not even like with Sherlock Holmes because with Holmes the personalities differ but they tend to do so in creative and engaging ways like how Michael Kane's Holmes is basically Professor Lockheart from Harry Potter but Cumberbatch's Holmes is closer to Antony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter.

TT hit the characters spot-on, if you ask me. Balancing personalities with personas so well that nothing lesser quite compares.

Thank, that was a good read. You managed to put in words what I've been feeling about this whole situation for a long time now. Glad to read well thought out comments on FJ, not just the quick reaction-pic following the band wagon.

While I agree, I personally don't see any progress ever getting made in this campaign. This is one of those situations where the majority of the voices heard on the side of men and gamers are the morons who go around, spamming women with "Hurr durr, shut up and make me a sammich", which just makes the silent majority of the actual group (people like you and I, who just want reason to prevail) look just as bad. Yes, we're striving to have our voices heard, and to prove we don't mean any harm and only want fair treatment, but so long as those idiots on the front lines keep slinging around offensive comments because they think it makes them cool or they just enjoy conflict, we'll never get anywhere. It'll always be one step forward, and ten steps back.

Yeah, you're pretty much spot on. That said, I think that there's still a lot good to gather from this movement even if it gives rise to many less-than-honest people. There will always be people who use a good movement or a cause to something dishonest, but with time and some effort from genuine people it'll make atleast a good number of people understand (which is the point really). Even if only a small amount gets the message, it's still better than nothing, and with time that understanding will surely improve and grow. Honestly, I can't say wether Gamergate itself is honest or not as a whole, but atleast the message s honest, if a day comes and the idea of Gamergate is "lost" then the message will still surely be there ever stronger (maybe under another name). I do agree with you though, it's rather unfortunate that both sides of the discussions have bad apples that makes an otherwise simple message distorted and misunderstood.

The only issue with that being that the vast majority on both sides are intentionally being assholes because they like to pick fights, so it isn't about the cause anymore. Regardless of the intent, all most people know when they see Gamergate anymore is that it has something to do with gaming and that Feminazis claim it's oppressive (much like everything else that dares to exist).
User avatar #283 - kombee (12/09/2014) [-]
Exactly. It's sad, but it's the reality of the situation, and what we need to do is to fight the good fight regardless of the name Gamergate (although using it to unify people is good) and not get caught up in Feminazi #5 did this and Feminazi #87 did that. We're being too sensitie ourselves to their (honestly rather stupid) attempts at "feminazy-ing" for a lack of a better word, i.e. we're taking the bait.

If you are interested in continuing to read our conversation, we have likely moved it to my profile. One of his responses was pm but I will post it to my profile anyway in-case you are still interested

Have a great day!

I am actually quite interested, thank you very much for the consideration . I was actually about to reply to some parts of your conversation but decided not to since I felt it would be rude to cut in in a conversation like that also I was too lazy at that point lol , so I decided to spectate instead.

You have a great day as well, and thanks!

That's fine. I very much understand how it may require time (to think, get enrgy etc.) to reply to something, and I'm very much the same in that aspect. Especially when I'm on too late

So I saw some of your comments in regards to the existence of God, and i just wanted to input my two cents

I believe the existence of our universe proves that there is a supreme creator. For example, I am using a laptop. Now I do not know who assembled it, who excavated the silicon used in it, ect. However, the fact that I have this laptop proves that at one point, there existed a person who created it. Similarly, you do not know my parents, but the fact that I exist proves that my parents also exist. Because of this, I see the existence of our universe as proof that something existed to create this.

This seems to be similar to your views, I just think explaining it like this is more simple

User avatar #8 to #7 - kombee (09/26/2014) [-]
Lol, yep that's definitely a good way of explaining it. I'm currently learning how to be a programmer, meaning that I write and excavate code that runs and become some sort of working program. If not for the programmer actively writing that code, there would be no program in the first place regardless of wether the small bits of code knows this or not. Anyway thanks for writing that, it's always nice to see someone with the same belief as yourself actively partake in a discussion about it instead of shying away. Props to you.
