You want the absolute best anime ever made? This one that looks completely retarded: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
It's pretty much about if the Nazis 1940s Germans made magic alchemy into a science and used it instead of actual technological development.
Reasons it's the best: There's actual character development with no character acting like precedent says they wouldn't, there's no tits for the sake of tits (in fact the only two times tits were mentioned is because they were relevant to the situation), there's comedy where there needs to be and no comedy where there doesn't need to be, great animation, lovable characters, everything they do actually feels explainable even if it's just anime science (unlike the 2003 version of the series where it was just "lol it's magic i don't gotta explain shit"), it's pretty depressing at times (you've probably seen on here the thing with the dog and the little girl, that's pretty early in the series), it's intriguing and mysterious without being like "oh no what could this be? TUNE IN NEXT TIME ON DRAGONBALL Z FMA:B TO FIND OUT!", and the main character is really powerful without being too bullshit overpowered that he can defeat any opponent.
Plenty of other reasons, but I'm too distracted by this massive turd that wants out so I can't think of anything else.
Anyway, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the greatest anime ever made. It's also got a great dub, which is so rare nowadays.
