ketchup has a very strong flavor that can cover up the flavor of the hot dog. I prefer mustard only because i can taste the sugar in ketchup but I'm not going to fault somebody else for using it.

Because it's sweet and hot-dogs are intended to be tangy.. Therefore ketchup masks the true flavor .
Personally, I think people should eat their food however the like it, but try it the 'recommended' way at least once to see if they have been missing something better..
