Now thats just silly. isnt the term 'a foot' as a measurement dependent on the shoe size of the king/queen thats currently ruling? so how did they figure out a definitive measurement for that?
User avatar #17 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
i cant tell if you're joking or not, so i'm going to explain. a foot is just a term.
12 inches= a foot
3 feet= a yard <about a meter
1760 yards= a mile <bout a kilometer
anything under an inch we use metric. i have know idea why, and haven't realized til just now.
User avatar #18 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
then why is it called a foot..?

thats overly complex for simple measurement....

a mile is 1,600 metres, a kilometer is 1,000 metres, so a mile is about 1 and a half kilometres, not 2 thirds of one...

oh, sorry. you should tell remsaman, not me
User avatar #21 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
first off, i wouldn't move here unless it was in a city area. second a mile is actually about the easiest measurement to get used to guessing, that wont be a problem at all. look at it this way, a mile would be about 30 to 40 houses down a street.

well, maybe not move to america, maybe canada. i dunno, i havent sussed things out yet.

well, everythings sussed out by parliament, most descisions are made by the prime minister(but it has to pass by all the members of parliament to get through). but ultimately, any laws or anything serious has to go past the governor general, who acts in place of the queen(who simply cant manage two entire nations)

User avatar #44 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
Pretty much.
its a shame in real life people dont understand the difference between being sexist and anti feminist.
'feminism is trying to fix the problems of both genders by focusing only on the one'
User avatar #41 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
that's exactly what i was getting at. "stop using our tax money to actually help our people so i can complain that you are using it for other things" XD
User avatar #42 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
if you think about it, complaining about it is just a subtle form of racism(in most cases, anyway.)

I mean take australia for example, julia can simply say 'fuck off back to where you came from' instead of putting them in a detention centre, but politics doesnt work that way.
User avatar #39 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
hahaXD people just don't like Obama because it is the beginning of his second term. you never actually see good things happen until near the end of the second term (if they get a second term) right now he's basically putting bushes mess in the trash can. i dont really follow politics, but history tends to repeat it's self
User avatar #40 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
Sadly true.
I can see though, that bush fucked up and just isnt there to take the fallout.
it seems like a lot of what obama does, people see as a bad thing for no reason just because. like, i think i saw someone post the issue of continuing to give out welfare?
he has a duty to care for the country, he cant just let people starve to death or resort to theft (or larger crimes) just because they want to eat. and its not like he can stop them spending the money on alcohol and drugs.
a lot of what people are complaining about, obama simply cant control.
User avatar #37 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
i think it was more meant to keep the people happy rather than give them what they need. it's basically bad parenting. and they also attempt to use propaganda to get the people to vote for the better idea.
User avatar #38 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
True.
I guess thats one reason people hate obama, but i cant really elaborate much on that, seeing as i dont live in america.
god obamas voice is so hypnotising. allofthehomo

but its always better to give people what they need, not what they want.
User avatar #35 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
thread limit is up, and and personally i think democracy is a good idea; America isn't truly a democracy. they just make people think their votes do something. in all honesty the senators and congress men choose what happens without even looking at the votes.

we did go to war for them in WWI though. wrecked peoples shit with our marksmen.
User avatar #31 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
it's a colony under a monarchy. i agree, that's retarded
User avatar #33 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
its retarded, but mostly because the fucking parliament never approve anything that could help the nation.
at least gillard helped us out of the national debt crisis(with the stock market crash)

democracy in itself is a load of barnacles anyway. not trying to be smart here
i think it was socrates, from ancient greece, who said 'i would rather be goverened by my betters, then my equals'. which is pretty much taking a direct stab at democracy.
i could go on, but i dont want to bore someone with intellect with a philosophical lesson.

yeah i guess that makes sense.
tbh though, and i might get a lot of hate(or not) for this, but nearly everything i see the americans use for measurement makes no sense.

imperial for example, why is it so hard to use metric like the rest of the world?
User avatar #15 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
i'm american. i completely get where you're coming from. it actually happened because back when the American Revolution was happening (blah blah blah) the Colonists wanted to be as different from the British as possible. so they found any possible way to teach the next generation differently yet still accurately. now that they are big things here it would just be too difficult too switch. the only thing sold in the metric system in America is drugs. that's simply because since it has to be kept underground there really isn't time to deal with the transfer if it's coming from other countries.
User avatar #16 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]

its retarded, but mostly because the fucking parliament never approve anything that could help the nation.

Well its just a bit of a stupid numbering system, formed from a really odd base. Instead of using something sensible and relatable (like water) it uses Brine, which is just weird. Why use something variable as a base for a counting system? Plus its just a bit awkward to use compared to centigrade.

personal opinion, because i grew up using metrics, but i find celcius a lot simpler to understand. it only has 2 digits, and when dealing with colder temperatures, '0' is a lot easier to remember as freezing point for water.
User avatar #13 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
well, it IS simpler. that doesn't necessarily make it ridiculous. actually since it's so simple, learning Fahrenheit first (being that 32 and 212 are harder to remember) having it set in your brain. it would be better for a learning process. making it easier to remember 2 temperature scales. i think i explained that right, i really hope it makes sense XD
User avatar #14 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
yeah i guess that makes sense.
tbh though, and i might get a lot of hate(or not) for this, but nearly everything i see the americans use for measurement makes no sense.

imperial for example, why is it so hard to use metric like the rest of the world?
User avatar #15 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
i'm american. i completely get where you're coming from. it actually happened because back when the American Revolution was happening (blah blah blah) the Colonists wanted to be as different from the British as possible. so they found any possible way to teach the next generation differently yet still accurately. now that they are big things here it would just be too difficult too switch. the only thing sold in the metric system in America is drugs. that's simply because since it has to be kept underground there really isn't time to deal with the transfer if it's coming from other countries.
User avatar #16 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
Now thats just silly. isnt the term 'a foot' as a measurement dependent on the shoe size of the king/queen thats currently ruling? so how did they figure out a definitive measurement for that?
User avatar #17 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
i cant tell if you're joking or not, so i'm going to explain. a foot is just a term.
12 inches= a foot
3 feet= a yard <about a meter
1760 yards= a mile <bout a kilometer
anything under an inch we use metric. i have know idea why, and haven't realized til just now.
User avatar #18 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
then why is it called a foot..?

thats overly complex for simple measurement....
#19 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
WE ARE WEIRD PEOPLE!!!
size 12 shoe is exactly a foot long
#20 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
america confuses me.
considering i plan on moving there for personal reasons later in life, i dont think id survive. itd be like 'how far is the nearest gas station?'
'about 2 miles that way'
'.... could i get that in kilometres please..?'
User avatar #22 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
and a mile is about 2 thirds of a kilometer
#98 - cubespike (02/19/2013) [-]
a mile is 1,600 metres, a kilometer is 1,000 metres, so a mile is about 1 and a half kilometres, not 2 thirds of one...
User avatar #99 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
oh, sorry. you should tell remsaman, not me
User avatar #21 - kiethstone (02/19/2013) [-]
first off, i wouldn't move here unless it was in a city area. second a mile is actually about the easiest measurement to get used to guessing, that wont be a problem at all. look at it this way, a mile would be about 30 to 40 houses down a street.
User avatar #23 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]

User avatar #30 - remsaman (02/19/2013) [-]
well, everythings sussed out by parliament, most descisions are made by the prime minister(but it has to pass by all the members of parliament to get through). but ultimately, any laws or anything serious has to go past the governor general, who acts in place of the queen(who simply cant manage two entire nations)

i have no clue what its called, but yeah. technically its a monarchy, but not really.
