Mom always made sure I had plenty to eat when I was a kid so I wouldn't be stunted.

That isn't to say my nutrition hasn't suffered after I lost my job. Been eating canned shit and hitting up the food banks for 6 months until I was finally able to find employment again. I know what it is to be hungry.

Roatary engines are by far the best engines for racing. That is, if you have the money. They create the most power per liter of displacement by far, weigh very little, and with some mechanical skill, is actually very easy to work on, and the rotors shown here can be "stacked". One, two, three, four, and so on can be created with one engine.
#64 - grimmwaters (02/05/2015) [-]

No really teribble but expensive and can broke quite often.
User avatar #22 - yeoldsnipermissile (02/05/2015) [-]
But, but, Muh 13b!
1.3L, 20 mpg, and 1,000,000 RPM per ft/lb of torque.
10/10 would witchcraft again.

Also, Boxer and Rotary mentioned in one post, swell with JDM.
#103 - ahhdamit (02/05/2015) [-]
oh god someone who likes cars but not just american cars, also how the hell do you get 20 mpg out of a rotary engine ?

also nsx ftw
User avatar #140 - fonestig (02/06/2015) [-]
The rx8 is supposedly 23mpg highway.

the NSX wasn't a rotary. As far as I know only Mazda have used it successfully.

And i would say there are more people on here who like real cars other than people who only like american.
#143 - ahhdamit (02/06/2015) [-]
lol i know the nsx inst a rotary its a 3.0 or a 3.2 depending on year, and im surprised that rx8 can get 23 cause i have always heard it got like 13, also i heard the apex seals die at about 80k
User avatar #145 - fonestig (02/06/2015) [-]
its all really dependent on how it is driven. If you buy an RX7/8 you probably aren't going for fuel economy.
#54 - John Cena (02/05/2015) [-]
<3 rx7
User avatar #20 - thedungeonmaster (02/05/2015) [-]
Well yes and no. Yes because they run so hot that you should probably do a swap every 100xxx km which, who can afford that and no because you can get crazy horsepower out of these and the mazda rx7 is one of the coolest cars ever made.

Let's go over a quick pros and cons:

>High power to weight ratio
>No valves

>Low arbitrary efficiency
>Require at least 6000 rpm shaft speed before turbo spools up because rotors spin at 1/3 shaft speed
>Burn oil on purpose to keep things lubricated
>Extremely hard to work on
>Low combustion efficiency due to long combustion chamber
>Low compression ratio
>Apex seals burst at high boost
>Multiple spark plugs

Now let's do a pros and cons of a 2 stroke piston engine:

>High power to weight ratio
>Extremely easy to work on
>Durable as hell
>No valves

>Burn oil on purpose to keep things lubricated
>Low combustion efficiency due to scavenging
>Low compression ratio
>Low arbitrary efficiency
User avatar #144 - fonestig (02/06/2015) [-]
This is not right

>High power to weight ratio
>No valves
>No vibration
>Higher rpm (smoother)
>No reciprocating parts

>Low arbitrary efficiency
>Require at least 6000 rpm shaft speed before turbo spools up because rotors spin at 1/3 shaft speed (turbo is based on exhaust and the engine has no effect on it.
>Burn oil on purpose to keep things lubricated
>Extremely hard to work on (less parts involved means its easier to work on)
>Low combustion efficiency due to long combustion chamber
>Low compression ratio
>Apex seals burst at high boost
>Multiple spark plugs (only needs 1 per rotor)
User avatar #150 - SteyrAUG (02/06/2015) [-]
A single rotor wankel would vibrate without balancing rods. Two rotor engines would have vibration around the z axis because they are swinging the opposite way out of plane, creating a couple moment. Thee rotor engines would suffer from a combination of the two. So while they may run smoother, saying they have no vibration is wrong.

They get higher rpm because the shaft spends three times for each time the rotor spins. 15,000 rpm out of a wankel isn't impressive, whereas 15,000 rpm out of a piston engine is.

The non-reciprocating rotor actually gives difficulties with the apex seals, as the centrifugal forces cause them to lift off.

I was wrong about the turbo.

Wankels have more parts than a 2-stroke piston engine because of the exotic sealing methods required for the rotors. They also have significantly tighter tolerances, again due to the sealing meaning they are harder to work on.

While one spark plug can be used in a wankel, they generally have more than one because the long combustion chamber doesn't give enough time for the flame to fully propagate to the ends. Some wankels like the one in the 787b race car even have triple ignition.
User avatar #151 - fonestig (02/06/2015) [-]
I understand it has flaws, i felt like you made it out to be worse than it actually is. The wankel is a much better engine when done correctly and you don't factor in reliability or fuel consumption. Unfortunately the reliability is really bad.

A supercharger uses the crank shaft so you can't have a supercharged wankel.

I like your name
User avatar #146 - yeoldsnipermissile (02/06/2015) [-]
I think what he means by harder to work on is that tearing apart a rotary is extremely finnicky, they have extremely low tolerances, as well as next to no replacement parts that can be mixed and matched. In a 13b, if one rotor's Apex seals give out and it scores the rotor, thus requiring damaging, then your remaining rotor, your central rotating shaft and your new rotor need to be sent to either a Mazda dealer, or a Mazda certified machinist in order to balance all three components to each other. Each set of three moving parts is specific to each other, there is no "plug and play" aspect to Rotary maintenance. It fucking suuuucks.
User avatar #148 - fonestig (02/06/2015) [-]
i was unaware of that.

The red line is a stock 4.0 from a 1989 Jeep XJ (i.e. the Renix, the same engine as in my 1990 XJ). You'll notice that the red line is entirely flat as it goes off the chart at the left side which is 1650 RPM. Unfortunately that's the lowest RPM I found on a dyno graph but I can back mine up too.

Also, I'm not sure why you had to go from relatively civil to full on douche-bro mode in 2 seconds flat. You're the kind of guy that gives car people a bad name. Then again, it's pretty hard to call someone a car person if they willingly drive a Kia, no matter how much power it makes. You're one to talk about terrible transmissions. I have never in my life seen a Kia that made it to 200,000 miles. However, I have seen many AW4's last with almost no problem beyond 300,000, so I'm not sure where the hell you're getting your ideas. They're not very efficient and they're heavy and slow, but big fucking deal, it's a fucking Jeep, what would you expect?

And yes the Renix make less peak torque but they do it at far lower RPMs and since you're trying to say that your big dick Kia Optima is the reason you can't stop spinning your tires at 1700 RPM, that's kinda the point then, innit?

You wanna get your dick in a bunch over the Jeep? Ok, let me put it this way, I drove a Ram 2500 with 440 lb ft of torque for work and still managed to not spin tires in snow because I know how to drive. You just wanted to try to show off about your car with 300 lb ft of torque and now you look like a douche for the effort.
