Neither, i used skill books and other ways to upgrade my skills. for example i used the blackbriar guy in riften to get my speech up, fought an essential unkillable npc for an hour to upgrade my sword skills and i found a bandit and did nothing but block his attacks with my shield to get blocking up. Wasnt that easy but it wasnt that hard either.

Using shadowmere isnt cheating because he would die right away. Almost everyone uses the blackbriar guy to level up speech. Using a giant to level up blocking and armor at a low level is suicide (unless you really want to join the nordic space program). You can level up pickpocketing by sneaking up to an enemy and just steal all their shit, take everything, if they notice you just kill them, doesnt matter anyway.
