Money is just a surrogate for a service. You exchange a service for money, which can be exchanged for any service, not just the one provided by those you are providing a service to.

"As of October 1, 2012 the United States had a total resident population of 314,680,000,[1] making it the third most populous country in the world."

"With a combined population of over 500 million inhabitants,[22] or 7.3% of the world population,[23] the EU, in 2011..."

And that's while there are countries like those in scandinavia or eastern europe that still haven't been accepten in the EU. Just wanted to throw this out there

Of course, I just forgot to mention that. They actually have problems with their economy being too strong, I read something about them even lowering the state investment fonds. The currency would grow too much therefore aggravating the export. Barely could believe that some countries are having such sweet problems to worry about

The EU is an economic union more than anything. These are still autonomous nations that wouldn't emasculate themselves for anything unless there was some personal gain
User avatar #152 - bluedwarf (11/01/2012) [-]
That is true, but it has nonetheless brought a stronger feeling of unity in europe.

I'm probably asking to be thumbed to hell for this, but...

The "U.S." isn't making a big deal about this. The people on the east coast are. In the south, this shit happens all the time, and barely anyone gets worked up over a storm of Sandy's Caliber. As for your reference to Katrina, I was in it, and I can tell you that a Cat. 3 is much worse than the cat. 1, which is what Sandy is. And even then, the only reason shit got bad in N.O. during Katrina is because the city is BELOW sea level, unlike new york. Also, most of the problems reported on after Katrina were due to botched rescue efforts or other problems caused by humans.

In conclusion, any one who has to deal with hurricanes in their full force multiple times a year can tell you that a Cat. 1 is nothing.

P.S. And before any of you northerners try and pull that whole "yeah, well if you got snowstorm in the south you would be freaking out", I have seen snow in Louisiana, and we didn't even cancel school for it. so shove a sock in it.
User avatar #207 - meganinja (11/01/2012) [-]
alright, let me explain it to you this way. People in California get earthquakes all the time. They build their structures to accomodate for that, because otherwise their house would fall down twice a month. In the Northeast, hurricanes are an extremely rare occurance, and buildings aren't made to handle it.

Also, the water did the damage, not the wind, and category is just wind speed.
User avatar #180 - elcreepo (11/01/2012) [-]
Bullshit.

It snowed two inches in Louisiana last year and everything was closed. I can prove it with a news source.

NY is below sea level in the most heavily populated areas. Lower Manhattan is STILL flooded at this time. Plus, you're forgetting that up north we just got hit by hurricane irene and the recovery was so badly handled most people in my town had no power for a month.
User avatar #116 - RisenLichen (11/01/2012) [-]
The lower half of manhanttan is below sew level. Thats also where a lot of people commute to and go for tourism and shopping. soo..thats pretty bad

I live in Texas, and I lived in Atlanta and Charlotte before this and nothing like that has ever happened before lmao.
#71 - barstoolninja (11/01/2012) [-]
key word there: Texas. Texas is a big ass fucking state and most of it is inland. considering that hurricanes weaken over land and they travel slowly, most of Texas will remain unaffected. same applies for the other places you mentioned.
#73 - longboarding (11/01/2012) [-]
"Atlanta in Charlotte before this..."
#74 - barstoolninja (11/01/2012) [-]
"same applies for the other places you mentioned." too far north and inland to be hit by the full force of a hurricane. not to mention the fact that they are higher up above sea level.
User avatar #53 - doopleganger (11/01/2012) [-]
You're right but I think that N.Y. Is freaking out over the hurricane is that the transit system and subways are flooded. In N.Y. we depend on mass transit and this is a BIG kick in the nuts for us.
User avatar #52 - Jackimole (11/01/2012) [-]
Hah, ever had a day so cold you couldn't go to school? No snow, just -15 degrees.
#59 - barstoolninja (11/01/2012) [-]
maybe not sub zero temperatures, but it has gotten to 15-20 degrees here in the past few years. At that point, all the pipes are frozen and they are forced to cancel school because there is no more running water.
User avatar #61 - Jackimole (11/01/2012) [-]
20 degrees, that sounds miserable. Oh wait, that's every winter here. Except our pipes don't freeze for some reason. Probably some sort of antifreeze shenanigans going on there.

Anyway, why are we arguing about who has worse weather? It's not like weather is really that much of a nuisance now a days, with heavy parkas, and anti-hurricane engineering for buildings.
#66 - barstoolninja (11/01/2012) [-]
true. we don't get sub-zero temps here, and ya'll don't get temperatures upwards of 110 with humidity factors that make it feel closer to 120.
But my original point is people shouldn't be making such a big deal over this hurricane when storms of this caliber happen several times a year. a cat. 1 hurricane in the south is about the same as a foot or 2 of snow hitting in the north. nothing but a minor annoyance.
User avatar #78 - corkscrew (11/01/2012) [-]
Two feet of snow IS a big fucking deal
That WILL shut everything down

and sometimes we do get it so hot it feels like 120 with the humidity

But I still feel your pain, weather sucks and the only decent place is inside
#85 - barstoolninja (11/01/2012) [-]
Maybe I should rephrase: yeah, things get closed, and yeah, it kind of a big deal, but in the end, no major harm is done.
#51 - anonymous (11/01/2012) [-]
someone hasn't actually seen what a blizzard is. or been in temperatures under 30 degrees. Don't assume, just because you got an inch of snow for an hour you understand what a fucking snowstorm is.
