The situation is that simple, though. People do what they want to do. They make the choices based on what they want the most. If this is the life he leads, then it's because of the choices he makes. There is no other force holding him against his will to make the decisions that he's making.

The situation around the person changes from person to person. The solution remains to be the same across the board, however. It can be hard to make the decisions needed to change your own life. In between being in that position and making the decision to lead a more responsible life, I had gone to therapy and been pushed by my situation at home. I was fully capable of making the decision to change before therapy and everything else, but I simply had not wanted it enough. I wanted to be irresponsible and procrastinate more than I wanted to be responsible and do the things I knew I needed to do.
