Mainly I wanted to say "main bad guy", but that doesn't sound as Star Wars-y.

But he's not the main bad guy. The BBEG is Snoke, while Ren is just his apprentice, and a shitty one at that. It's entirely apparent that Snoke is the antagonist, given that in the Original trilogy Sidius isn't even introduced until the final movie, and is only barely mentioned before that. In the new new trilogy, Snoke is introduced practically at the very beginning, and even though he is never physically seen in-person, it can be assumed that the reason everyone is afraid of pissing him off is because he can kill them from wherever he is hiding.

Luke went toe to toe with THE sith lord in Empire without excessive or complete training. This is how I rationalize rey taking on ren. Ren like vader had training but is less powerful, rey strong with the force, but with little training was able to match and injured ren. So the way i see it, its kind of like luke vs vader in Empire but both rey and ren are less powerful. if that makes sense

But they were not sith either, the inquisitors that is. Just dark side force users trained to handle lower level Jedi. And the rule was created by Darth Bane, before that there was tons of sith. But since, as you pointed out, the last two sith are dead, so it is not a question of there shouldn't be sith, but there can't be since there is no one to pass on the knowledge of sith. And even if there is, maybe they wanted to take a different approach to the dark side than the sith. Like if Luke wanted to take the Jedi in a different path, they wouldn't be Jedi anymore.

The difference being though that religion is man made (unless you believe in it of course) but we know for sure the Force is real in this universe. So it really depends on how you practice it. Being a sith is a certain way of being and acting before being qualified as a sith. The same with a Jedi. You can be a light side user but not giving a crap about what Jedi teachings are and having your own practises with the light side. It might not be as sufficient as a jedis way, but it still makes you a light side user but not a Jedi. And what came before (if we look at the extended universe, even though it is not canon the point of the religion itself is man made holds true) the Jedi was the Je'daii that which practises both the light and the dark... that is know has grey Jedi now. You're not a jedi for using the light side, because the term "jedi" is something man made and not something the force created, the force is just there and being a Je'daii, Knight of Ren, Jedi or Sith is just a different way to utilize the force for what you believe in and not the other way around.

i wouldn't exactly consider them untrained. As a First Order storm trooper, Finn was trained for combat from birth, and Rey had both significantly better control over the force than Ren and better survival instincts having lived alone from a young age

i think they whole point of the movies was to be a mirror of the first movie a new hope, which was a also a mirror for phantom menace i think because a lot of the things felt basically copied from the original like hans death being like obiwans which means kylo and rey are gonna get their force training like luke which will probably be like half way like luke

You're not wrong. Lucas said that the films are like poetry, that the prequels "rhyme" with the original trilogy, and I think the new movies will respect that in some regards. However, they know when they need to differ from the storyline and bring new aspects into it.

Really like that episode where they find a potential new jedi on a desert planet, too.

Also, I think one of the big reasons Rey is so strong in the force is because she's actually Luke's daughter..

Because people can be strong in the force without actually being born from stong force users... And regards of her being Luke's daughter. I just don't see it happening. It is too obvious. If you consider their marketing about Finn so people could be surprised about Rey actually being the Jedi, This just seems to obvious to be case. And Luke would have no reason to dump is daughter at a hostile harsh planet. Even like when he was dumped on a harsh planet, it was with family. I just don't see it. Maybe other important people, just not Luke.

Kylo was fucked up in a lot of ways before the fight started, and Rey seems really strong with the force. Also, Kylo never finished his training. I would have put my money on Kylo Ren, but I can see why Rey won.
